Subject: 5 speed vs auto IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know how much faster a stock 4.7 V8 is than an auto 4.7? I had to settle for a automatic since 5 speed V8 are impossible to find in the used car market? what could I do to my auto performance wise to make up for the difference that a 5 speed would have over an auto.
Any suggestions would be helpful?

Message: a couple of tenths faster, depending on the
driver. I think the 5 spd loses 15% hp through
the drivetrain, and the auto loses 20%...so in
the long run, with a lot of mods, the 5 spd will
be way faster.

Message: I too looked for a 4.7 5sp on the internet in Northern California. No luck, maybe one in a hundred and they were sold before i could make an offer. However, looking through a number of auto research sites (msn, car trader etc,.) one strange stat leaped out, the automatic got 15mpg city and 20mpg on the highway. The 5sp got 14mpg city and 19mpg hwy. I've never seen a 4.7 auto get better mileage than a 4.7 stick. I saw this on 3 different research sites, no B.S.

2000 4.7 auto,3.92LSD, k&n drop-in, 2 chambered flowmaster, synthetic mobil 1, mike leach flashed chip on the way.(only 7,700 original miles when i bought it). This will hold me for now until a find a decent intake system. (i've only had the truck a month).

Message: mopar2ya - The EPA will tell you an automatic will get better gas milage all the time because the shift points are programed to be "highly efficient" whereas the "shift point" on a manual is always at the driver's descretion. The reality of the situation is, on the highway almost all manuals get better milage, and in town, the average auto will do better unless the person driving the manual does so specifically with economy in mind.

Message: It set me back $17.2K. 2000 4.7 auto CC 3.92LSD, Flame Red, Power:6x9 mirrors, seat, doors, windows, 6-speaker premium sound, sliding rear window, 15x8 tires, alarm, overhead computer, Heavy duty: battery-750cca, radiator, alternator, other stuff I can't remember right off. 7700 original miles.
The guy was going into the military and had to get rid of it. I saw it on the internet and had to travel 300 miles round trip (Chico Ca. to the bay area) to get it but it was worth it. I bought it 6/20/02. My only regret was not finding a 5sp.
mopar2ya,
2 chambered flowmaster, drop-in K&N air filter, synthetic mobil 1, just sent my chip to mike leach for flashing, when it comes back I'm putting a cold air intake, 180 T-stat and autolite plugs in it at the same time.

Message: The Auto's will be less on fuel mileage due to the constant slipping in the torque converter until it shifts into overdrive. Then and only then will you have A direct connection between the engine and tranny.
The only good thing about Auto,is quick shifting from gear to gear, which is faster than most people can shift A standard tranny.
With A standard tranny, you can chose shift points. If you are comming into A turn you can drop A gear or two so you can power out of the turn, and can handle more heat and stress without burning up. ( towing )
Another good point for the standard tranny,,,
If your girlfriend/wife is sitting next to you, you have an excuse to rest your hand on her leg .
I just wish I could get A R/T with A standard tranny.

Message: I'm not sure that I agree that the auto will get better highway mpg than the 5spd. Remember, the 5th gear is 1:1. In the auto, what is the overdrive? I think that it's about .79:1. So with two vehicles, same cu. & rear gear, and cruise speed, the auto will get the better highway mpg. I have a '97 318cu 5spd. and it turns 2300rpm @ 65mph. You want to be at or under 2000rpm fo good mpg. I can pass alot on the highway, except gas stations at 15mpg!

Message: If you all are THAT worried about the mileage, get different gearing. Personally, I love my 5spd w/ 3.92 gears, even on the highway. Hell, I was able to take a Sunfire -- no laughing -- from about 60 on up. It was fun messing with that thing; it had the new window sticker and everything. Makes me never want to buy a Sunfire, I thought these gears were supposed to suck as higher speeds.
