Message: A mechanic buddy of mine suggested that I get the automatic tranny fluid changed as soon as possible on my 2001 Dakota 4.7l 4X4 4300km., and then add a conditioner to keep the solenoids lubricated better. I'm concerned that this may void the warranty, so he suggested to get the dealer to do it. Any idea what the cost of this would be (I live in Canada) and if its a good idea.

Message: I know that Mopar tranny's need a special Type 7176 fluid (ATF +3, non of that Dex III or Mercon III). And, I think that the 00-01 trannys need ATF+4, I'm not for sure though. As far as changing it and adding and additive by the dealer, they use the same stuff that came from the factory, so why the change. The difference in fluid in the Dex III and ATF +3 is a friction modifier, kinda like the stuff added to rear ends for LSD and posi. I have a 97 and a different tranny, but I see no reason to do this unless a Technical Service Bulletin comes out for the tranny.

Message: The Multi-speed automatic transmission used with the 4.7 V-8s need Mopar ATF+4 ONLY. This transmission is the 45RFE. The year of the vehicle has nothing to do with the fluid. It is the transmission model that matters. The 45RFE has to have ATF+4. The other autos can take ATF+3. I don't recommend adding any additives. Just use the ATF+4 and you will be fine. Also, as far as aftermarket tranny fluid... unless it SPECIFICALLY STATES that it is meant for transmissions that must have ATF+4, don't use it. A general statement about "good for Mopar transmissions" is not good enough. Not all Mopar transmissions are created equal.

Message: It sure wouldn't hurt to do a filter change if it's in the budget. Like he said about those filings in the filter. Any new mechanical piece will wear in and for that you will get those small particles that could possibly clog your filter. As for changing it , If you can afford it than it wouldn't hurt to do so but I wouldn't worry about it. My rearend was recently making a grinding sound at 40,000 miles and so I pulled the cover off and changed the fluid and it stopped making that horrible noise. A simple fluid change saved me some big time $$$$$$$$ . Come to find out that a locking rear end has a 4,000 mile breakin period and I was supposed to change the fluid after that time. Well I didn't know that until now ofcourse!!! There was a 1" x 1" x 1 cm high pile of small metal shavings from the breakin period!!! 99 slt w/ 5.2 4x4 5 spd

Message: Find someone to help you do it and it'll prob. cost around $50 for filter and fluid. As for your warranty question, you'll prob. never need to bring it in to get fixed from the dealer as long as you do a filter/fluid change around every 40,000- 50,000 miles

(old trans has about 67,000mi on it) the new transmission has about 15,000 miles on it and thought about having a dealer flush it.. anything I can do aside from flush/filter to prolong the tranny from dying in another 45,000 miles? shift kit? new pcm? (does a pcm control the shift points or no?)

Message: I was having trouble with my last truck wanting to stick when it shifted my wonderful mopar dealer said they would have to rebuild the rear section of the tranny. 1500.00... I took it to the local tranny shop and they put it on one of the new evactuator type machines, completly drains your entire system then they flush it with cleaner till it's clean, and also put seal conditioner in it. drove just like new afterwards till I just sold it, over 2 years later. I'm sold on it I will have my new dak done every 2 years just to avoid any problems. cost? about 100.00. beats the dealer's solution....

Also, there was an awful grinding sound after I bought it that sounded like brakes. It was not the brakes. I had the rear differential fluid change and it stopped. They said there was water in it.

Message: Yes Curious George, Amsoil ATF meets all ATF+4 requirements. Make sure the trans is flushed rather than just pulling the pan and draining it. This will get out all the fluid, including the torque convertor. Good luck.

Message: In December 87 I was looking for new truck that could tow a boat and drive 100 miles a day for work in L.A. The best choice was 3.9 V6 Dakota with a 3-speed only 999 trans (I think that's the number). I drove it 336,000 miles with the same engine and trans. So in June this year I went to Frahm Dodge in CA and bought an new CC 4.7 with that Multi-speed trans. It feels like it shifts 10 times from stop sign to stop sign. The high stahl speed in the converter must be generating a lot of heat which makes me think it will have shorter life than my last one. How long do they expect these transmissions to last?

Message: I assume your truck is out of warrenty. I cannot help you with the torque converter, but I would like to let everyone know that if they have problems with thier trucks while under warranty and the dealer fails to fix it properly; after the third try you truck could be covered by the lemon laws. I learned the hard way. I made many trips to the dealer to fix a sloppy transmission shift problem while the truck was still under the factory warranty. I was never fixed properly. Now with 65K on the the truck, the sloppy shift has grown to 2nd gear complety gone - slips like hell.
The result - the dealer says it will cost $2500.00 to fix it! What the @#$%^$#! Stick to your guns if you have a problem which is covered under warranty! Call the Chrysler Care number and pinch a fit! Or else....

Message: I got my DAK with 35,000 miles on it. I think the manual calls for tran fluid change every 30,000. When I changed it their was a pile of shmeg in their. Mine hesitates for 2 seconds in the mornings before engaging in first. I live in Florida so I think it is fluid drained not a temp problem, but it seems pretty normal as she'll light em up out of the driveway. It appears very important to maintain proper fluid level and change every 30k, also let the truck warm up. Anybody else have this?

Message: Hey Stoggs, I have the same delay I have a 2000 Dodge 4.7L 45RFE 2-wheel drive stock club cab.
How many quarts did it take to fill? did you fill to the "between the low mark dimples" when truck is running at idle, in N. cold or 70'. I filled mine, its just above the high mark of the "low-or-cold-mark dimples, on the dip stick.
mine took approx 4.75 quarts with the flat filter-change. I think it takes 5.5 for both filter changes. If you remeber how many quarts?
I think the delay is some sort of computer-warm-up program that is used by Dodge?
Hey does your truck have a limit at 100MPH? when I get to 98MPH the engine kills it self, how do you eliminate this speed limiter?

Check to see if its just the hose thats gone, and possibly just the fitting the hose attaches to, that'll save you alot of money. not sure exactly what your talking about though, so I'm just giving general advice about a busted hose.
