Subject: Runnin' strait pipes on my 318!

Well, I finally got the balls to remove everything rear of the cat and it sounds good. Loud but good. Is it possible for me to burn up a valve with a strait pipe?

no you should be alright, just stick with dual 2" or single 2 1/4 but you do need some back pressure(this is just my 2 cents but i'm sure some else has a better answer)

I have striaght pipes on my 99 5.2.Went with 21/4 pipes into 3" chrome tips sounds really good deep and throaty.Noticed a gain in performance nothing huge but I know its freed it up.Haven't lost any power which is good but I rwally need to change my plugs to 3923's autolites.Still have the plugs from factory and I notice they are wearing out a little.

I have run dual pipes for about 2.5 years without A problem. I have 2" pipe from the cat back, and 6" round and 2'long tips installed, it has A REALLY DEEP tone to it. If I didn't have to pass the sniffer test every year, I would remove the cat, and run true duals for A better tone.

Would it be alright to run straight pipes (no cat) and when inspection comes around strap the cat back on and still pass?

Engine/trans replacement
IP: Logged

Message:
My 1992 5.2 Dakota has about 140k miles on it.
Trans rebuilt at 80K (auto o/d).
I am debating on rebuilding current engine/trans
vs. putting in late model roll over. Anybody know if late model 5.2 and auto trans will bolt right in???
What other engine/trans options (V-8 only) will fit? All advice most appreciated.

Low end torque is,,well, tire smoking. I had pics. ( but accidentally got erased.) When the engine idles just right, you can feel the vibration in you chest.I am currently changing my set up from straight back to comming out at A 45 deg. angle out the back. The only problem I have is dragging them pulling into steep driveways.

I have a 93 C.C. ( ya know one of those 2 years they used the monster exhaust manifolds back the pipe at the cat measures like 3.25"inand out) I'm running 2.5" duals with 90 degree bends out behind the tires sounds awesome. I love setting of car alarms and deafining people with their windows open and convertibles. By the way this is also a 4x4 and it just loves eating mustangs and camaros. With a 3" body lift and soon to a 4" suspension and 35's

I have straight pipes on my 1997 Dakota with a V8. It goes staight from the cat to a y pipe and straight pipes from there. Will this hurt my engine? The O2 sensor is not effected by this, but I was wondering if it would mess something up. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

no it will not hurt your engine
unless you have a gutted cat, the o2 sensor isnt in the equation. it doesnt care about anything past the cat. in fact, i dont think it cares about anything. it just has to be grounded (on the pipe, or even strapped to the frame) not to throw a code. in fact, you can even gut the cat and you still wont throw a code.

If the numbers the O2 sensor is producing are extreme in any direction it will throw a code.

If you have any O2 sensors behind a cat, then gutting the cat will throw a code. If your o2 sensor(s) are in front of the gutted cat it will not make a difference to the sensor and you will get no code

I took my 95 into the local muffler shop, and for $10, they removed my muffler and put in a section of pipe in it's place. Talk about an awesome sounding truck!!!!!! It sounds as if I spent a couple hundred on exhuast mods. I guess it does pay to be thrifty at times. The sound is not extremely loud, it's just right. Very troaty sounding. I did this over a year ago, and I've had NO problems of any type. I also installed a Elderbrock chrome air filter assy on it (part # 2168) and it seems to have more power now.

A late model 5.2 and tranny will bolt right in, BUT....in '96 they went with OBDII PCM's. They also stopped using the gear drive speedo, so after that there was no hole to bolt the speedo cable into. You could still run your speedo with an electronic box from Abbot, but there are other issues with the tranny being controlled electronically. Save yourself that headache and stick with '95 or earlier tranny. Also, you'd need to use the engine harness from your truck.

I have a 94 sport 5.2L with a cat back exhaust straight pipes out the back(no mufflers)and I have had no problems with my O2 sensor or my valvetrain. It sounds greats and runs even better as well as still passing inspections. If you remove the convertor your truck will be twice as loud as with it and won't pass inspection. An aftermarket converter(high performance) will allow you to maintain backpressure with a mild performance gain(not worth it for the money).Upgrade your air intake(K&N) and you igntion(jacobs, msd, accell) along with the straight pipes and you'll see a much more noticable increase in power.
