Message: A stock 5.2 Mag usually puts out between 175-185 hp at the wheels - it does depend on the dyno. The K&N GenII intake will give between 7 - 10 hp, the exhause around 5 hp and the Jet between 0 and 10 hp. Realize that when an advertisemsnt says "Adds 15 hp!" it does not say that it adds it at the peak power rpm. The Jet may add 5 hp at 3500 rpm but 0 at 4500 rpm. All will fatten the hp curve and improve drivability and overall performance....except maybe the Jet, as lots of people don't feel it does much of anything at WOT. You can have a much faster truck with zero change in peak power, if the mods fatten the hp curve above or below the peak. Bragging on your engine's peak hp is for bench racers anyway.....

Message: how can a 5.2 MAG V8 put out just as much as my
3.9lt V6 Mag???? I'd figure it had to put out at least 318hp..hense the name 318??? or am I wrong???
Although it does seem kool that my 6 banger put out just as much HP as a 5.2L V8 :o)

Message: Ok I figured I would tell you "rear wheel horsepower" is what you get at the rear wheels not the crank the 5.2l 318 puts or 230hp from the factory and the 3.9 puts out 175hp but after you add in drivetrain loss the 5.2 has 140hp at the rear wheels depending on the Dyno that is used because in the last issue of Truck Trends a 2002 r/t with the 5.9l only dynoed out at the rear wheels around 157hp and they have 250.Thats just my 2 cents though.

Message: ok dakotaman,
318 is how big the engine is, not horsepower.
so that being said no your 6 banger doesnt put out as much as the 5.2 or any V8. go back to the V6 message boards

Message: metalgreendak, I gotta speak up about part of what you said. You lose 18-25% through drive train on a chassis dyno. The number you gave for the estimated rear wheel HP of a 318 figures out to be about 40% loss. If you take the 25% loss that leaves you at around 172hp. There was some discusion on hear about that artical and i think the concensus was that they made a mistake somewhere. I dynoed my 318 on a chassis dyno last weekend with some bolt ons, nothing fancy, the normal stuff that is discussed here. I pulled 210.3HP @ 255 ft/lbs. From the numbers i pulled and from the mods i've done i know i have not added 70 hp at the wheels to get it up to the final result. Just figured i'd throw that in to be kicked around.

Truck Trends R/T they tested had very unaccurate power numbers, if they didn't lied, then maybe they took the lowest number on the dyno sheet.
My stock MY2001R/T months ago with 4800miles dynoed at 210hp@4100 and 303tq@3600 at the wheels. Yes the numbers drop to very fast due to the beer keg 160hp@4800rpms. Maybe that's the number they took. Of course I don't have a stock R/T anymore, last 1/4 run nets my crank HP at around 300+, I should be getting my 2.02R/T heads and cam soon :) Hope to have around 360-400hp after that. 300hp at the wheels.

Message: So whats the consensus, I know the 4.7L has 235, and the 5.9L has 250, so I got somewhere in between that?
Then about 180 (25% loss of 240HP) at the wheels?

Message: hey I believe all you guys I love my dak and I know the numbers are not that low but I will never buy a Truck Trends again because they are some haters because they put the R/T up against 2 supercharger rides and well what do you expect.

Message: The 4.7l acutally puts out 230hp at the crank
and the 5.2l puts out 225hp. Ironically
everyone would figure the 5.2 would put out
more being a bigger motor but ud have to take
into consideration the bore, stroke, and
compression. And the loss of power through
the drivetrain also depends on 2wd or 4wd.
And even though the 5.9 and the 4.7 have more
hp then the 5.2, ill take a 5.2l over them
any day. They've proven to be one of the
better motors and usually get quite a few
more miles outta them. Also tend to have less
issues mechanically. And between the chip,
intake, and exhaust ull prob gain 25-30hp and
the crank but only about 15-20 at the wheels.
Get an underdrive pulley kit. It makes a
difference. Also if ur looking for
performance do an a/c delete, get performance
spark plugs, cap, rotor, atleast 8mm wires,
and ignition coil. Also get a 52mm bore
performance throttle body. And if u wanna get
into the motor get a ported intake, bigger
cams, and better heads. Also exhaust headers(
not shortys cuz they do nothing)
