Message: I don`t know every difference but here`s a few.
The R/T has 17 in wheels and is about 2in. lower.
It also has bigger swaybars front and rear and is only available with the 360 V8 and the auto. tranny.

Message: The SLT has Chrome bumbers and grill. The R/T has color molded grill and bumbers. The SLT is suppost to have a higher quality cloth for the interior. The R/T only comes with the 5.9L 360 CI engine. The STL has that option in the Quad Cab. There are a lot 'little' differences, its hard to name them all.
My SLT stickered about $2,000 less than a simmilar R/T.

Message: It is 1" all around as compared to the other packages. The R/T's come with the following:
5.9L motor
1' lower suspension
3.92 Gears
LSD
46RFE Auto Tanny
17" rims
Color matched Grille, front, and rear bumpers
Color matched fender flares (I think these are now offered with the SXT package, but not color matched...not sure)
Larger side mirrors
Infinity sound
I think that is pretty much it. I am not totally sure of what the SLT has.
Hope this helped...

The main differences between the R/T and SLT is the suspension (1" drop) and body options (trimmings - fender/bumpers). Trans and Engine can be ordered with the SLT as well (along with the gears).

But you are right in that the RAM tranny was built to pull not to go fast. Though I have heard of people bolting up (with extra tweaking) the Manual from a 318 to the 360. Since it is the same block.

Message: Bernd you are wrong on this one, the 5.9 never has had a 5-speed in any form of Dakota, 4x4, 2x4, RC, QC, CC, whatever... The NV3500 is just not rated by NV to allow that much input torque. The Rams use the NV4500 with the 360. The nv3500's don't always stand up behind 318's and 4.7's with a few mods, let alone with 13% more torque stock on a 360. It just wouldn't cover the warranty claims to put the NV3500 behind the 360, especially with the manufacturer washing their hands of it because it excedes their design specifications. Now then think all the problems of driveshafts and axles with the low first gear multiplication factor of the 5-speed. There would be even more problems there.

Message: I'm not aware of how many 11 and 12 second trucks out there have the 5-speed besides Duners and it's turbo having to build torque may be a lot easier on the drivetrain then would say a stock 360 or blown 318 would. And I'm sure there are some out there that will survive a while, but will they survive a full warranty period with enough consistancy not to eat up all the profits? New Venture I'm sure did a bunch of durability testing on their nv3500 to come up with an acceptible input torqe rating. One that the transmission could live with for the long haul. The fact that New Venture doesn't rate the nv3500 for the 360's stock torque is one reason you don't see the 5-speed as an option on the R/T, I'm sure of that. The same reason you won't see a 4.7 HO/5-speed combo in a Dakota either. The other big reason is that the extra torque multiplication of the 1st gear would require heavier axles and driveshafts.

Yupp!
Stuarth forgot to mention however, that the SLT bumper works very well in an accident!
