Subject: Heater question IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 Dakota sport 4x4 5.2 V8 with A/C. The question I have is the other day it was sort of cool and there was fog on the windshield so I turned the defroster on with the heat control on hot. The air coming out of the defroster vents was ice cold. The truck was up to operating temperature that it should have been throwing heat but it was ice cold. I realize that when you turn the defroster on it kicks the a/c in. I tore the dashboard out to check the blend door inside the heater box and all seems fine. I then went to the engine compartment once again. The return hose from the heater core can be removed from the motor while running and no coolant comes out until you get the rpm's over idle speed. The return hose is also cool compared to the supply hose. I figured that it was either a bad hose or water pump but have replaced both plus the thermostat and still have no circulation until above idle speed. I just bought the truck and this is the first time I had the temp to the hot side so I have no idea when the trouble started. The only other thing I thought would be a blocked heater core but when I put the garden hose on the heater hoses it flows fine. Please help I am going out of my mind.

Message: sounds like the same problem i am currently having. No hot air on idle and very little warm air when up around 2000 rpms. I too noticed that the air conditioner comes on sometimes when on defrost. Both my hoses are hot. I noticed this is an older post, have you resolved your problem? i am getting tired of driving around freezing. And i know if i bring it in its gonna cost me a mint. Please someone shed some info/solution to this problem, THANKS

Message: There has been much discussion regarding this on the V6 forum, and I am not sure that the same solution fits, but it sure sounds like the same problem. Solution at:
