Message: Tips really dont add any tone. The tone comes from the headers and muffler, you can dump the tips like I did and it will sound really nice (if you like it loud)

Message: Tips do add tone. I have seen this first-hand on several occasions. You can put a tip on a stock exhaust and it will change/ deepen the sound. Correct length and diameter play a big part.

Message: The only tips... (exhaust tips that is)... that I have experienced are those that some LOSERS put on their pitiful rice rockets. Shure, they have a slightly deeper sound at idle, but when you give them any kind of throttle there is an exceptionally louder BRRAAPPPPP... I am starting a compaigne to toss granades under the cars which sport those irritating tips. If you want a bigger sounding engine, GO BUY A BIGGER ENGINE!!!
By the way, did I mention that I don't like the Muffler Tips.
In support of a tip... the correct "tuning" of the exhaust system will give you better performance, but that would take computer modeling, air flow testing, dyno testing, ect. I don't that you would even get close by buying some aftermarket tip and bolting it on. The only thing you will accomplish by bolting a "tip" on is irritating the @#$@!% out others and looking like CHUMP in a wanna-be pathetic little vehicle.
By the way, did I say I didn't like the exhaust tips. :-)

Message: I have a 2001 dodge dakota reg cab 2 wheel drive with a 4.7L. I didnt have much money for mods but i took off the muffler and had 2 1/2 exhaust pipes and added two 3 inch echo tubes(tips) and now everyone i talk 2 about my truck think i have a flowmaster system. so i would say that tips do make a difference in the sound. i think gabriel doesnt know what he is talking about.

Message: Dak318
Do you and you friend with the ram have the same motors?? That will make a difference. Also has he had his glass packs on longer then you.. The older the glasspack the more it roars. If tips really made it sound better then why isnt a brand like flowmaster or gibson taking part in tips. If you want a tip that makes noise pep boys has those ones that are blue and red and all that sound like crap. Tips are for looks, to cover the end of the pipes thats all.

Message: Actually gibson does believe in tips. All their systems come with the addition of tips if you want one. Flowmaster doenst have tips, but they should though. Im not running glasspacks, im running a dynomax welded muffler, with a side pipe. The end of the pipe has a 4 inch tip. Since my tail pipe is 2 1/2 and the tip is 4, that tip creates a megaphone. THerefore the tips does make it throatier, and louder!

Message: the 4" tip I had on mine just made a fart noise
everytime it shifted @ WOT...sounded kinda
funny.
sooooo I had the thing dumped, and believe
me, if you want loud inside and out, dumping
the exhaust is the way to go, my truck shakes
so much, it makes my head rattle, and thats
cruisin down the freeway. as soon as I give it
gas it has that (dont flame me) mustang
throaty sound.
my tip sucked on my exhaust, plus it scraped
every time I backed out of a driveway.

Message: Yeah, I ran open exhaust on my 318. I cut right after my cat. Its freakin crazy ass loud! I swear the truck sounded like a drag truck. I only had it like that for about 3 days, then i had to get a muffler. I think i might of even got hearing damage from it!

Message: Yeah its common sense that tips do make a difference because the sound is commign out of a small pipe into a bigger area adn the sound waves make an echo like those megaphone things chearleaders yell into...... i put a catback system on my 5.2 with 3 inch tips and a single glasspacl and i cut the cat off and bought a pipe at autozone to replace it adn let me tell you there arent to many trucks aroudn here that can out pipe me but as far as getting those little 5 inch long tips from autozone they dont make a differnce or at least i didtn hear any when i put one on my moms blazer

I think it's the picture angle he's refering to.
I'm PO and understand Cheap, but had to study the Pic for 2 minutes to figure out where the tips where. Hit it at another angle.

Message: Hi I just thought I would reply to this post even though I dont have a dodge. I am a big fan of the Echo Tips my self. I think with a truck duels with no muffler or cherry bombs and a pair of crome echo tips are thje way to go.
