Message: A lot of the different manufacturers will claim that their oil is better...in some parts they have slight advantages (and disadvantages) over each other...but mostly, with regular oil changes, they're equal (price differentiates them).
I tore apart an engine with 150K miles on it (customer used only Mobil-1 on it) and the internals were exceptionally clean and no build-up at all (even tore apart the crank and pistons). For those who want to run synthetic...Mobil-1 is plenty.
Royal Purple, Amsoil, Redline...they are a slightly better oil (for extended oil change intervals), and two of the three have shown HP improvements on the Dyno as well. It's all based on budget though.
(The $0.70 more for the Amsoil, at 3500-5000 mile oil change intervals, still makes it more expensive than Mobil-1. At 7500 miles with just a filter change in between makes it an even wash on price.)

Message: Quaker State and Pennzoil are both paraffinic base oils and tend to cause a lot of varnish and if not changed very regularly, sludge.
I ran the factory breakin oil for the first 1K, have Castrol 5W50 in it for the next 3K and then I'm going full synthetic, probably Amsoil.

Although Red Line Oil is touted as a top-notch synthetic oil, oil analysis results show that, at least in passenger vehicle applications, it may not be formulated properly. Red Line oils are for TRUE racing applications.
On passenger vehicles (cars and trucks)it has been determined thru testing that when using Red Line there is excessive wear metal content, low tbn value, excessive oxidation percentage and Molybdenum levels which are "over range". These results would seem to indicate that after a fairly short oil drain interval the Red Line Oil used was showing unacceptable levels of oil degradation, and the Polyolester base stock seems to be reacting negatively with the aluminum and lead materials in the engine.
In addition, the "over range" Molybdenum levels indicated that Red Line may be using a solid extreme pressure additive in its oils. Although this may be useful (but is not necessary with top-quality basestocks) in RACING applications where metal components of an engine may be more likely to come in contact with each other, it is not necessary in a passenger vehicle engine and can actually be harmful to the engine. This would make sense, otherwise there would be no reason to indicate the levels of Molybdenum to be "over range".

Somewhere and someplace someone asked about Amsoil Warranty. I can't find the post with the question so I will post here.
--------------------------------------------------
Most Important: Keep accurate service records and all purchase receipts
--------------------------------------------------
Vehicle manufacturers recommend using motor oils meeting certain grades and American Petroleum Institute (API) service requirements. Whether the motor oil is petroleum based or synthetic will not affect warranty coverage. The manufacturer is required to cover all equipment failures it would normally cover as long as the oil meets the requirements and was not the cause of the failure.
AMSOIL exceeds these requirements and has never been deemed the cause of an engines failure. Even so, AMSOIL has its own limited warranty, protecting you even further. In addition, the federally mandated Magnuson-Moss Act states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge.
* If a car dealership, service center or other business states that using AMSOIL will void your new vehicle warranty, ask for that statement in writing and send it to AMSOIL Technical Services (AMSOIl Inc., AMSOIL Bldg, Superior, WI 54880). If the business won't provide the statement in writing send AMSOIL Technical Services a letter identifying who made the statement, the name and location of the business and what the specific statement was. AMSOIL will then send a letter to the business informing them that their position is inaccurate, and, in fact violates existing law. Your name will be held in confidence. A sample of this letter can be provided upon request.
--------------------------------------------------
For additional information on Amsoil's Limited Warranty please visit my website.
--------------------------------------------------
Amsoil's Limited Warranty is in effect when Amsoil Products are used in mechanically sound engines, providing, of course the oil is kept free of contaminants by changing the oil filter according to the manufacturer's recommendation or, when using an AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filter, changing the filter based on Amsoils oil and filter change recommendations.
Additionally, if there is ever a question of whether or not a particular oil was the cause of an engine failure make sure to get a sample of the used oil in a clean bottle, typically 6 oz. minimum. The oil can then be sent to two independent testing labs for analysis (labs are located throughout the country).
A reminder: Keep accurate service records and all purchase receipts
--------------------------------------------------
Remember, an informed consumer is your best defense against being taken advantage of by a vehicle dealership or service center.

Message: Yes, Havoline is fine. Castrol GTX is also good. 10W30 will work just fine. Change it every 2000-3000 miles and use a decent filter. Baldwin, Hastings,Purolator,AC/Delco all make a decent filter at an affordable price. I listed the filters buy quality and price. Stay away from the following oils: Quaker State and Kendell. Stay away from the following filters: Fram, Penzoil, and Quaker State.

Message: Royal Purple...Awesome oil. I have used Mobile 1 synthetic for 15 years with very good success. I recently changed to Royal Purple 10w-30 after I saw a Camaro gain 8 RWHP after switching on Horsepower TV. My 1991 318 is just about broken in at 167K miles, but seems to run smoother on RP after 11 years on Mobile 1 10w-30.
I am sure AMSOIL is a good oil. I wasn't able to find any dyno number on their site though??

The question you "which oil" is like a political nightmare. There is no "one good oil" and most that really stand above the crowd usually are not available "on-the-shelf" (retail stores).
So, if you're looking for something "on-the-shelf", you'll find a majority of them are pretty good, especially since the new GF-3 base stocks have become a requirement to be API certified.
You need to determine, standard 3k mile drain entervals or extended drain (with analysis), dirt roads, pavement, mostly TRUE offroading, pretty warm most the time or colder climates? Do you drive hard, race, or drive like your grandmother did? (actually my grandmother was a "racer"). What is the oil you are currently using, and are you having problems with it? If so, is it oil consumption, leaking seals or breakdown?
Are you running the M1 TriSyn or the SuperSyn?, If you're worried it might not be a good choice, do your 3k drains, then send in a sample to an oil analysis lab and see how well it checks out. This will show you if you have to worry about changing it ...rather than being influenced by what a bunch of guys (on a forum) say based on their personal feelings, something they read, who their favorite race driver is, or the color of the bottle.
I myself have a bad feeling on M1's SuperSyn, but I cannot say for a fact it isn't a good oil. I suspect that the TriSyn version of their oil will be better than the newer SuperSyn. Just preliminary things that I personally don't like ... but under your driving conditions you may find out that you don't stress the oil so it might be fine for you. In other words,... investigate first with oil analysis and determine if it is adaquate for your situation.
Here's what I'm using:
Motor oil- Mobil 1 TriSyn; Gear oil - Mobil 1;
ATF - Pennzoil; Brake Fluid - Valvoline synthetic
My supply of Mobil1 TriSyn is about exhausted so I'll be looking for something different soon.
Contender could be Amsoil Synthetic 10w-40 as well as switching to A-L-L Amsoil for one source and discounts. They seem to have a very good "across the board" offering, especially interesting with their Universal ATF.

Message: I agree with the notion that choosing an oil is almost as much a personal perference as the car you drive. Everyone seems to have their brand loyalty.
There are facts out there that support some oils are definitely better than others. Most hard core car enthusiasts know Quaker State and Pennziol are not good oils. The 2 years I work as a dealer mechanic doing engine overhauls taught me that.
As far as snythetics....I think we could all agree that Mobile 1, Redline, Amsoil, and Royal Rurple are excellent engine lubricants. I am sure if you chose any one of them and change your oil at proper intervals that you would see no wear and little to no engine deposits.
...my 2 cents
