Subject: how's magnaflow on torque? IP: Logged
Message: I want to replace my stock muffler with a high performance one. I want a muffler that is relatively quiet but will still add some power. I have a 2002 4.7 liter quadcab. Since it is auto and the 4.7 I do not want to lose any torque. The local muffler shop really like magnaflow but is it true a straigh through design like the magnaflow would cause a loss in torque? BTW I'm keeping the stock 2.5 inch pipes---could I still lose torque with the magnaflow muffler?

Message: As long as you stay with a single pipe at stock diameter you won't lose low end torque. In fact you will gain some. Some people think that a loss of backpressure from the straight through muffler causes a loss on the low end. This isn't true. Low end torque depends on the velocity of the gases leaving the pipe. The higher the better. If you use a bigger pipe or dual pipes the gases have a tendency to slow down and therefore torque is lost. Just change the muffler and you should notice a slight gain throughout the rpm band. Nothing dramatic but at least you want lose anything.

Message: I want to put a Magnaflow on my 01 4.7L CC auto as well. I just added a K & N FIPK, so would it be better to get 3" single pipe, or just stay with the stock pipe? Thanks for the help!

Message: I kept the stock 2.5" with my glass packs and actually gained some low-end power, for example: it started to accelerate better in OD.

Message: Greg, I have a 2000 4.7L CC 3.55 w/ a homemade intake. I just replaced the muffler (as the stock exhaust is already stainless) and with both, got a good increase in power.

Message: Cat back systems are a waste of money if you already have a fairly new truck. Just replace the muffler.

Message: I went with a single 3" pipe, carsound cat and magnaflow muffler on my R/T. Didn't loose an ounce of torque and it flys down the highway now. Magnaflow is a quality muffler.

Message: Message for handi2:
Why do you say that catbacks are a waste of money? I just bought an '02 SLT QC auto 4.7 w/ 3.55's. Does this come w/ Stainless exhaust already? I was actually looking at the Borla, but wasn't sure about the 5 bills it would releive me of.
Can you expand on that a little?
Thanks
Vince

Message: Let me say this: the exhaust from the cat back will not give you much of a gain if any. The main benifit of an aftermarket muffler is the sound. To make any gains you have to start with headers and work your way back, this in turn will also require more intake (manifolds, TB, cold air intake, etc.). If it was me I wouldn't bother with stainless steel mufflers and such, cause the rest of your exhaust will fall off first anyway. Go with aluminum its cheaper and will last several years. However, some have noticed a slight change in HP/TQ and MPG with their catbacks.

Message: Or you could just remove the third cat and go with true duals. It was a significant HP increase over stock, and my MPG went up by 10% (that's my minimum documented gain so far). It sounds mean as hell, and it does give it a bit more pickup through the mid and high RPM ranges.

Message: Hadn't really thought of removing a cat. Don't know if I want to do that. What does that do for emissions testing? I don't want to have to keep tweeking my exhaust every couple years.
I figured the HP gain wouldn't be much without other work, but I was meaning WITH some additional bolt-on's (like the Z-tube and TB spacer initially- heck, maybe a larger TB). Other stuff is down the road, but I love a strong exhaust sound to tame my need for instant gratification. Still trying to decide if I want to send my PCU through the mail only to hope the dealer never flashes it again.

Message: It's just my opinion that if you have a new truck why spend all that money on the extra exhaust piping (w/the cat-back) when you can just change the muffler. I also don't like loud exhaust b/c it doesn't mean you have more power.
A cat-back system would be nice if you need a new exhaust system.

Message: Well if you have a 2001 or later model I would suggest you do the headers, so you can remove those pre-cats and the restrictive Y-pipe. Otherwise the stock R/T exhaust is actually pretty good for performance. The R/T does respond well to single 3" pipe with an aftermarket cat, and a highflow muffler.
A cat back is simply a new muffler and tailpipe. It doesn't really do much for performance on our trucks.

Message: Which model and size Magnaflow do you all recommend?
I have an '02QC 4.7SLT 4x4. I want a single 2.5" out. (2.5" is stock, right?)
"Straight Through" was mentioned above. Is that supposed to be the "Universal?"

Message: Magnaflow makes a large truck muffler (5 x 11"), but the only one with a 2.5" diameter is a single in dual out (12580). You might have to go with the 5 x 8" muffler to find a 2.5" single in/out(12276). With Magnaflow the performance doesn't depend on the size, they are a straight thru design, so all of them perform about the same. So the smaller the muffler the louder it will be and vice a versa. Check them out at www.magnaflow.com
Yes if you have a high-flow cat it will make things a few dB louder. However if your using a conventional tailpipe setup (side or rear exit) it will not be loud inside the cab at all. It will sound aggresive but not annoying (like flowmaster). Going from 2.5" pipe to 3" doesn't really make it louder since the exhaust pressure/speed is a little less then the smaller pipe.
O.K. this wraps up magnaflow exhaust 101, we will have a test tomorrow on chapters 1 and 2. lol
