Message: bought my 97 with 42k miles on it. now it has over 100k. run 125 miles daily back and forth to work (my choice) averaging 18 mpg. everything stock. Outside of normal wear and tear I've had to replace the water pump once, the heater bypass hose (it went before the pump) and the plenum gasket (belly pan gasket) and the evaporator. I elected to replace the heater core at the same time. I'm agressively lazy. So far it's been a good ride.

Message: Let me tell you ..........Mine has been ONE reliable ride for almost 6 years. I special ordered my RC, 2WD 5.2 sport with almost every option available, build date was 11/96. Sticker was just over 20 grand. I've got almost 140,000 miles on it, and I still now would hate to get rid of it. Mechanically, it's just about as good as the day I drove it out of the showroom. (yes you actually do drive it out of the showroom)People still say it looks new. It runs like a bear. From a stand still, I can smoke the hell out of the tires. Or, roll away from a stop, tromp on it, and still get the tires to break loose. But, that's fairly rare, I went to Alfred State back in 1970 and graduated from an Internal Cumbustion Engine curr. ( I don't believe they offer it any more)I've always had a nack with engines. You have to really understand them to treat them right. Here's a bit of info for you to ponder..Can anyone tell me why you can take right bank pistons and switch them with the left bank ones and increase your HP by about 25%. (except ones with valve clearance pockets of course) But you will cut the life in half! And how many of you ever poured a handfull of minute rise down an old carburator to knock the carbon build up away from the valves?
Gee.. back to the main subject....it still start's with a click of the key and pumps up close to 40 PSI idleing at 600 RPM. (Mobil 1 since the first oil change) Only mods to the engine-- Bosch platimun +4's and a K&N filter. Well, I would like to tuck it away and show it some day. I think it might be fairly rare optioned out the way it is. Sure has payed for itself in my mind. By the way, If you haven't guessed, I've always been a Mopar fan, Must have come from my high school days of "Terror" rides in my buddies Hemi Road Runner! Man, those were the day's!!! Too bad I couldn't afford those outragous $3000 sticker prices!!!!!!!!!!!!! My first car was a 59 Volkswagon that I gave 100 bucks for! Well, too much, I could go on forever, I did drop a picture of it a while back in Viewer rides if anyone would like to see what it looks like. It's in album 13, the one with the SuperBee style stripe on the back. And, if you finished this post, thanks for sticken with me.

Message: Schmitty , swapping the pistons side to side is something you can do with a set of factory slugs to get more compression , the pins in OE pistons are offset to reduce friction and piston slap , swapping them side to side brings them closer to 0 deck height but also increases friction and the pistons slap like hell. You might pick up 10-15hp but not 25%. Swapping aftermarket pistons side to side will make no difference because most aftermarket pistons have the pins centered.

Message: bigdakota87- I wouldn't want to try that rice trick in todays engines. We used to to that many moons ago in the old carburated monsters of yesteryear. Please don't ruin your engine on stupid advice from me!!
and for moparjoe------It was probably a stupid question - after I saw your answer I serched the web for piston offset. Remember, I myself hadn't thought about this for 30 years! There was a lot about piston slap but as far as any compression increase, wouldn't it be the same since the geometry is is just mirrored about the theo. CL of the connecting rod and bore? I was always under the impression it was a simple force ange relationship. And... the 25% increase in power was probably a little overstated.
Anyway happy motoring and I hope Sterlin wins for Dodge today!!
By the way ,, what did you think about the looks of my 140000 mile ride?

Message: My 97 5.2 auto (44re) has been nothing but good to me, even though I have been terrible to it. I wish I could have a little more power, but I am glad I have reliability. I have had no problems.

Message: Well I have my truck lifted 3 inches with a body lift, 4.10 gears and I get at best 13 mpg on freeway but even before all that, at best I was getting only 15 -16 mpg on free way. All city has always been 10-12 mpg even with the new gears since last summer. I had 3.55 before that. Towing 6-8mph consistantly
My truck engine makes a lot of knocks always has even with super unldeaded and all things people suggested to try like 92 gas/plugs/wires/K&N filter,/belly-pan gasket change/ gibson exhaust...etc. Mine still knocks bad under load. All and all though it's held up well. A couple of water pumps, batteries, normal 3000 oil changes and it's still moving at 127k. I've never had a single problem with the Tranny. I've had tons of problems with my brakes. I have to replace the rotors or get them turned at least every 5000 miles. I've had the entire brack system replaced front to back (couple of grand) and still I'm back to the same problems (totally a waist of money). I hate the brakes to death on this truck. I've replaced all the ball joints with moogs so don't forget about that little cork.
I've towed quite a bit with truck, I'd say at least 60,000 miles with 3000lb or more so I've gotten my monies worth I think except for my brake problems. My boat trailer has built in brakes so don't anyone here try to tell my it's because of my trailer. I've driven enough with my truck not towing and it's still the same problem. Believe it or not my truck stops better when my trailer is hooked up... lol
If I could do it again I'd definitely get the 5.9. I can't believe how much more power I could feel from that engine compared to my 5.2 after driving a friends truck. I'd also find a truck with 3.73 gears rather than the stock 3.55 unless you drive 90% of your time on the freeway.
Over all, I'd give the truck 5 out of 10. I'm never buying a dodge again though. The brake problems have drove me bonkers and over-all the quality just isn't as good as some other trucks/cars I've owned from Ford/Chevy.
just my 2 cents but I'll be back to ford again for my next truck quite soon..waiting for the 2007s to come out.
~Bill~
