Message: I own a 1999 Dakota 4X4 clubcab with the 318. The
transmission shifting is eratic. Upon stepping on the pedal in overdrive, the transmission doesn't want to shift back into overdrive after hard acceleration. It wants to stay in drive, even when the vehicle coasts under no load. I find slightly pushing the pedal down a few times, it kicks back into overdrive. Could this problem be a trottle position sensor or lack of transmission service. I've had the truck for a year. Thanks.

Message: Hmm I had the same thing happen to me today in my 98 Dakota 318.
I entered the freeway and stomped on it. Low and behold the same problem occured. I was doing approx. 60 65 mph at 4500 rpms. I fooled with it for a sec, hitting OD button on/off and tried the gas as well. The next exit I got off and put it in park. I got back on the freeway and it seemed fine. My friend owns a 99 Dak 318, I plan on asking him about it in the next few days and see what he thinks.

Message: I had the same problem whith my 99 Dakota SLT. The dealer ran check after check and even changed the over-drive solinoid in the transmision. I took the truck to another dealer and asked if my assumption of the throttle positioning switch could be the cause and guess what, Dodge had put out a message after a year that some of them go bad but not enough for a recall. Dodge has made a completely differant switch(Differant part number) and my problem went away. Good luck with both of yours.

Message: Oops forgot to follow up on this one last week.
Being a new owner I was not used to the shift column on Dakotas. I thought I had it in Drive however I now am sure I had it in 2nd which explains the high RPMs and the unwillingness to change gears. DUH!!! I felt so stupid when I told my friend that. Ah well Just happy its NOT broken!!!
