It is official, I spoke to a guy that has a "special" 2001 Dakoata. It is powered my a mercedes-benz 4.7L V8 engine. He told me that this was a factory-option for the year 2001. I think he said that less than 3,000 of them were produced.
He told me that all of the MB-powered Dakotas were black with gold lettering. The tailgate has the words "Powered by mercedes-benz 4.7L V8" There is also a MB emblum on the tailgate.
According to this guy, this was an "experiment" by DC to see how the MB engines would work in the Dakota. If I recall correctly, the MB-powered Dakota has a 185HP rating too. (about 50 more than the DC engine) He has the 5SP manual tranny and says his Dakota skoots right along.

He's only telling half a lie. About one year after Daimler-Benz bought out Chrysler, vehicles arrived at our facility with two mysterious new motors from DCX for us to test-a 3.7 V6 and a 4.7 V8. At the same time we learned that the 318 would be phased out and at some point in time the 360 as well. The origin of these motors? BENZ! Look at the telltale signs-SOHC, iron block, alum. heads, chain driven cams, even the valve covers are identical to the Mercedes 5.0 motor that it rivals. Nothing like Chrysler ever, ever designed on their own. If you wonder why the Mopar Performance (AKA DC) crew is so clueless and there are no internal performance parts for this engine, now you know why. Just my 2 cents.

The 4.7 was designed BEFORE Daimler bought Chrysler. Seems we have people who post before they research. The 4.7 is 100% AMERICAN!!!!!

Hey, there was this guy on truckins web site that had a white dak with blue stripes that claimed it was 1 or 10 daks produced that had the Viper Venom V-10 TT, it was called the PT/GT2 or something weird like that... Well first of all never in the history of mopar have they ever named anything GT, Secondly on the R/T site a couple of my friends looked into it and found it was actually a guys super charged 4.7 orsomething like that. The halarious thing was thatin the pic of the burn out the guy was doing only one tire was spinning. Venoms without pazi??
Now I'v just about heard everything.

And WallyR the 4.7 came out 1n late 1998 as a 1999 model. Daimler didnt have time to develop this engine!!! DUH!!!!

EYE TRIP - Do the research!!!! Daimler bought Chrysler in 1998 the same year the 4.7 was introduced. It is IMPOSSIBLE for even the Germans to develop and mass produce an engine that quick. So I dont believe everything I read - I RESEARCH IT!!! EYE TRip -Stick to things you MIGHT have some knowlege of - this post isnt one of them.

What if Mercedes had developed the engine and basically given the design to Chrysler knowing that they would be purchasing Chrysler in the next year. These mergers & acquisitons dont' just happen overnight. They develop for years prior to actually going public. Ever notice how the Jaguar actually runs on a Ford engine but has Jaguar badges. It's not even remotely British, now is it?

FACT #1 Daimler bought Chrysler in the summer of 1998.
FACT #2 The 4.7L V-8 debuted in the fall of 1998 in 1999 model Jeep Grand Cheerokees. ( For those that dont know - Chrysler had owned the Jeep brand since 1984).
With those two FACTS alone how can anyone who knows ANYTHING ABOUT THE AUTOMOTIVE industry say that Daimler had anything to do with it!!! The time-frame is IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

I guess you already knew that they contracted out with Lamborghini to design the Viper motor. All they did was design the truck motor out of cast iron and then mail it off to Lambo to do the aluminum version.....
