Subject: What is that Noise:-( IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 4x4 SLt Dakota with the 4.7 V8.
I have been noticing a noise coming from my truck recently. It is like a loud annoying high pitched sound coming from under the truck. It happens between 700-1800 rpms and is probably still making sounds after that but i cant hear it on the road. Any ideas to what it is or what it could be? Im gunna take it in to the dealer monday but i would like to know what it is i am dealing with. Thanks

Does it happen at idle? while in neutral? or only while driving?

Message: If you find out what it is, please post back here. I have the same noise and it is affecting my RPMs and idle. Makes the RPMs sorta hover at some spots too. My local dealer is too dumb to figure out what it is, so I am taking it to another one that is not full of scam-artists. I wont be there 'til Friday, but it would be awesome if your dealer found it, thanks!

Message: Does the sound come and go..? try, at idle, to engage and disengage the clutch leave the drivers door open to listen and see if it makes a difference to the sound.. it sounds to me like a release bearing going bad.

Message: Sounds like a pulley on mine. I was thinking I maybe have a belt of the wrong size, warped or misaligned. It also crossed my mind, that the auto tensioner is not working or working too slow. Mine is a 5spd 4.7L with only 7000 miles on it. It happens when the AC is on and off. Seems to be more noticable when it is on however.
The fan sound different, this is def. a belt squeal, but I just don't know the cause. I am installing my ASP underdrive crank pulley tomorrow and the new belt, so if it stops, I'll know.

Message: Maybe a vaccum line? I had a rubber line crack on my 2001, and it made a high pitched sound that I could only hear at idle. It took a long time for me to find it, but I did. Here's a pic of where it was:

Message: JBark, that is what I thought at first too, but it's coming from the belt for sure. If you put your ear to it you can tell it's somewhere down there. Same type of sound though, but this one is more of a squeel than fast air movement.

Message: I also had my clutch fan go, it was hard to figure out as it only makes the noise when it was not working, when it kicked in the air against the blades took the slack out of the bearing and stopped the sound, you can feel the excess play in the fan bye wiggling it then a new 4.7 on a lot.I would say the sound was like a high pitched rattle or bell sound.Hope this helps.
