Subject: Question for Duner IP: Logged
Message: Duner-
I read a tech article in June's issue of Mopar Magazine on installing these new MLS (Multi Layer Steel) head gaskets. They state to use Mopar aerosol gasket sealer on MLS head gaskets before installing them. Did you use a sealer on your gaskets when you installed yours? If so, what kind? My Tech Authority manual doesn't say anything about using a sealer prior to installing the new head gaskets. Thanks in advance...

Message: Nope. I didn't use any type of sealer or prep the
head gaskets in any way. I just made sure that
both mating surfaces were clean and simply torqued
to spec.

The heads/head gaskets have been on there for 6
months and about 7 or 8 thousand miles so far
without any problems.... and that's under boosted
conditions. I'm betting that they'll be all right.
If I would have known about needing the sealer I
would have bought some. I did use some silver
metallic paint on the exhaust flange gaskets...
does that count? hehehe

Message: I don't think it is a major thing. I am not sure of the reason they reccomned it. Maybe for exra sealing for that inital start up.

Message: I did a mild port clean-up and some bowl blending
with some exhaust and combustion chamber
polishing. The valves were so shrouded that I was
very suprised at how well it ran when stock. As
far as I could tell I picked up about 3 tenths of
a second or roughly 25 hp from the work.

Message: Thanks Duner and CW. I will make a trip down and pick some sealer up. I have a guy at a local performance shop trying to get some ARP head studs to replace the factory 11mm head bolts. They don't list our application, but I am sure with the specs we can find some that will work.
I have been taking pictures as I am working, so I will post ones of the port work when I am done if anyone is interested.

Message: Duner I resently installed a procharger on my 99 R/T
I've since then blown out two sets of head gaskets.I'm thinking of using multi layered
steel gaskets, and arp studs. As well as running the fmu richer at top end .Do you think this will cure the problem?

Message: Bob - I certainly hope that the next time you are away from the house your neighbor calls you to ask your advise about something. If he's anything like you are..... he'll call you back the next day and harrass you about all the time he spent making the call when you weren't home. Or better yet - he'll post up some sort of derogetory comment on an internet board that everyone reads. Attitudes such as this are one of the main reasons for only passing thru here on occasion. How on earth would you possibly expect someone to help you with your problem after responding as you did? Did it ever occur to you that I may have had more important things to do than hang around this board and type out free advise to demanding people with poor attitudes?
And now on to your question.......
You have a tuning problem. If it detonates it will break parts. Better head gaskets won't fix it. If you want any more info - you can go buy the book "Maximum Boost".
Have a nice day.
