Subject: R/T transmission issues IP: Logged
Message: I bought myself a '99 Dakota R/T a week ago. 43,000 miles. I love it but ... the trans is acting up. Most of the time it goes along just fine but now and then it does this thing where I pull away from a stop and it stays in first until I hit about 3000 RPM where it will shift to second and do the same dance to third. Doesn't matter if I accelerate hard or easy, with O/D or not. This seems to happen about the same time I notice a sound like an over-revving fan, it's tied to the engine RPM, that will fade as I drive along.
Oh yeah, when it's doing all this it will also downshift as I slow down for a stop.
Then ... it will all go away like nothing ever happened .. until the next time. Seems to only occur after the engine has warmed up and the car's been driven about a half hour.
I've searched the boards for similar probs and found some "maybes" like "speed sensors", solenoids in the transmission, TSB's that Dodge alternately confirms or denies depending upon whose page I'm on down to the choice of ATF.
I don't have the bucks to let a dealer experiment or guess. I've built up enough cars and engines over the years that I feel solid about attacking just about any solution (mechanically) that doesn't require a tranny teardown, that I still leave to the guys in the shops.
Ideas? Thanks.

Message: I don't have a solution just yet but I have the same problem as you do. I have a 2000 r/t and i bought it with 36000 miles on it. Ever since iI got it, I have noticed that every once in a while when I nail the gas it sounds like its over- revving and won't go into the next gear. I have asked a few people and they weren't much help. If anyone knows what to do please tell me. Thanks

Message: Sounds like someone may have over adjusted the TV cable. You can try this to see if it works. Cuz when I adjusted mine it revs the engine really high and shifts hard.
Heres what you can do...look by the rear of the throttle body and there is either a white clip or a little button you can push to either push the cable in or pull the cable out. What you need to do is mark it before you adjust it so you know where it originally was...then either pull the white clip out or push the button and push the cable in very slightly towards the direction of the front of the truck, its sensative so don't over adjust it. By pushing the cable in it firms up the shift and it shouldn't over rev like that. If you don't understand what I just said goto www.Speedtweaks.net and look under the help section under TV Cable Adjustment.
Now if that doesn't work re-adjust it back to the way it was and you should probably consider getting your tranny fixed.

Message: I was having the same problem with my 2000 RT. I also had the pinging sound when I was at 45-50MPH and accelerated. I went to the dealer, and they informed me of a software update. This update solved the pinging and also solved the shifting problem with the transmission. It no runs like it should, perfect, and shifts great.

Message: Check the throttle valve cable for proper adjustment, or you may have a governor pressure sensor or solenoid problem. There are revised parts for this problem. They are not very expensive either-like less than $300 dealer installed. If you have a good dealer near by.

Message: STAN. You said the dealer performed a software update.Alot of times they do this to keep from having to replace a intake gasket. My 99 318 had this upgrade when I bought the truck.I knew it didnt feel as strong as it should. If you look down into your throttle body, you might see oil. This will cause the engine to ping. They update the software, and it retards the timing.Check it out!

Message: look guys every r/t on the road will eventually have this shift propblem where it wont shift out of first at wide open throttle , i here this and that and the other thing about the tv cable,
that needs to be adjustied in SMALL increments, such as 1/16-1/8 of an inch, in either direction, early soft shifts or late hard shifts or vise versa,
be careful,
MAY RESULT IN TRANS DAMAGE.
I have an 2001 r/t which wont thift out of first at wot, im putting in a shift kit which i here is the best route for this,
Now in your case BIOTRON, start by checking the trans fluid level and condition of the fluid, and if all possible find out when the last time the fluid was changed, these tranys(46RE) need fluid changes alot more than ya think,
Nitro junkie your compareing apples with oranges
YUP, when your talking about govenor pressure sensor and solenoid, your going to want to change them as a pair, and also ask the dealer about the govenor transducer, which will also possibly fix the shift problem.
but thats just my two cents

Message: New valve body solved my problem.apperantly when the tranny would warm up the valve body would warp and it wouldnt shift out of 1st at WOT.
I still have a slippage though when accelerating at highway speeds.whole diffrent problem but i guess livable until i pay the thing off and save the money for a manual tranny.

Message: At -26 degrees, this morning mine didn't go into OD all the way to work. Last year was mild and it didn't happen all year. Five minutes is perfectly normal at temps below 20 degrees above. You have three temp sensors sending info to your computer and one of them is on the tranny. The other two are coolant and the good old IAT sensor.
I've been tempted to install an over-ride switch to fool the computer into thinking that it is warmer.

Message: I dont know what to tell ya about it not shiftin into o/d when its cold out. My 2000 r/t will always but kinda acts slow shifting of course when its cold.
When the speedsensor starts actin up your mph will start to read wrong, or it will shift hard, and sometimes not want to shift period from 1st gear. Mine went out and i tried all sorts of ways to make it shift but it wouldnt budge. Went to the dealership got it fixed, cost me close to hundred dollars after everything. But theres a week to 2 week period where shift at perfect rpms when ya get on it, and let me tell ya its noticeble at how much quicker its runs from a dead stop or roll!
Another time it acted up not wanting to shift on time or at all was when it the tranny fried. Didnt want to shift from 1st to 2nd and had a hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd, it shifted 3rd to O/D just fine. Problem: apparently the 46re's torqueconverter will wedge a bushing and slow down the tranny fluid from flowing through the tranny basicly starving it and ending in a fried tranny. But that only happens if the tranny is put under hard driving and alot of torque.

Message: I have a 2000 dodge dakota rt. And it pulled up a
trouble code p1762. It shifts at different rmp all the
time and when I first start up it doesn't wanna shift
outta first and the check engine light is on. And park
is like nutral. I can push the truck in park. Aamco
transmission pros. Said its the speed sensor in the
tranny. Other ppl tell me that my tranny is shot. But
from 3rd to od its fine and usually 2nd to 3rd is fine.
Sometimes it shifts fine all the way through. What's
wrong with it? I'm stummbled.

P1762 Governor Pressure Sensor Offset Improper Voltage
Could be the sensor connection is loose or the sensor is on it's way out.

Message: Hi, I have a 93 Dakota 5.2L and it recently and suddenly stopped shifting into 2nd gear, and 1,3, and 4th work fine aside from when the overdrive won't engage periodically . Whether in drive or drive 2, 2nd gear acts like neutral now. Please note it does have a shift kit that seems to still be in good working order going from 3rd to 4th but I'm not sure whether it's the MOPAR performance computer, sensors ,or something mechanical. I'm quite sure amongst some of you the answers can be revealed .
