Just got a 2001 Dakota Club-Cab w/ a V8. Couple things: shifting the lower gears I get a very loud and distinctive "clunk" when it engages; and when I put the foot on the brake, there's a little hammer tap noise. Are these standard groans of the beast?

Plus, the bed creaks like a 20 year old truck when going over any bumps - and I haven't even put it to that much use yet. I've had this for a month. I love it, but did I buy a piece of crap?

PS - it has 7000 miles.

You must have the 4.7L, 287. The 318 was discontinued, replaced with the 287. The 5spd tranny is the New Venture NV3500HD Heavy Duty. I have noticed the "cluck" before. It is really the nature of the beast, it shouldn't happen all the time. Don't worry, the NV trannies are some of best out there. The brake issue is unrelated and should be brought to your dealer's attention, I have never heard this noise. If you meant the clutch, there is a little noise as the clutch engages/disengages. As for the bed noise, check the mounting bolts and spacers. Make sure they are tight. Lube with a little grease if need be. If you do have a 2001 with a 318, I would be interested as to the story behind it. Hope this helps.

Boy, what a mistake. No, I do not have a 318, but the 4.7 - I just can't do any math. At any rate, thanks for info...
