Subject: Cracked Dipstick? IP: Logged
Message: Yesterday I took my 93 dakota with a 318 and automatic transmission to the local tranny guy. It's been leakin some tranny fluid for about a week, it only seemed to happen when it was cold, so i figured it was the gasket for the pan. But when I picked it up today, I was talkin to the dude and he said the transmission dipstick pipe-thingy had a crack in it right at the bottom. Then he said this is kinda common with american made pickups. Anybody here have any experience with this, or know how much it should cost to have it replaced?

Message: If the V8's are like the V6's, then if you look at your hood, you will see a scuff mark from the transmission dipstick where it rubs the hood.
My guess is that the force of the hood put pressure on the dipstick tube and this is what caused your tube to break where it did.

Message: My 94' 318 doesn't have a scuff mark. I wouldn't think it would be hard, or pricey to fix. It's just a tube that goes into a flange that mates with the transmision pan. Just not sure how it is heald in there. Possibly high temp RTV and a bracket elsewhere on the block.

Message: I really don't think the hood has anything to do with it, the dipstick sits well over 6 inches under the hood, actually so far down it's a pain in the butt to reach back there. The dude I talked to at the transmission place said it's all in the way those tubes are designed. It's just a piece of steel that's wrapped into a tube shape, with a crease on one side, and after a while, all the vibration and road conditions can cause that crease to open up a little. Anyways, the crappy part is that they have to take the exhaust off to get to it, and all my bolts down there are rusted to the point where they're gonna have to drill them out. The dude said $150, but after all the labor I feel it's gonna be quite a bit more than that.

Message: Well, it was just a suggestion. On my V6 the transmission stick rubs the hood. I had to move it slightly so that it wouldn't crack.
If the dude quoted you 150....make him stick with it when all is said and done....
Good luck.

Message: Remember that the case is aluminum. If the bolts are rusted it is just surface rust. The threads are not exposed. I would tell you to get some PB Blaster and hit them with some and then wait 15 minutes. The bolts should be fine even if rusted. He is bending you over if he is chargeing you $150.00 The tube is a $6-$9 part and the O-Ring is aboout $.50 and he will reuse the indicator(stick). I think that the warranty flat rate would be 1/4 hour tops. This guy must not get much return business if he charges this much for something that simple!!!!! If you supply the parts the most an independat garage should charge you for this is $15-$25. I must admitt I know little about dodges but I find it hard to belive that he would have to remove the exh. manifold to fix this. I would ask bernd his opion he knows dodges realy well. You might also ask CW
