Subject: 5.9L Exhaust question

Message:
Hi all.. I am trying to figure out the exhaust set-up on a '01 R/T... most the aftermarket parts I see (e.g. flowmaster exhaust, carsound cats) are listed as 3" in, 3" out. Isn't the stock R/T exhaust 2.5"? So my understanding is that there is a 2.5" Y-Pipe leaving the headers which goes into a 2.5 inch pipe which feeds the cat... then another 2.5 inch pipe goes into the muffler... the tailpipe seems to be 4" in diameter.

Please correct me if I am wrong. So if I wanted to upgrade my muffler to a Flowmaster, and cat to a Carsound cat which would both have 3" in and out, what other piping would I need?

Thanks!

Do what I did here in Germany,(I had to order the darn pipe from the USA special though) I put 3" on mine from the Y-pipe back and had every thing Mandrel bent by a local shop.(what few bends there is) I had them put in 2 Each 3 bolt flanges where the Cat goes, on a piece of pipe the same size as the original cat.(I took it out ya know)
Seems to me if ya put 3" pipe behind 2 1/2" pipe....... well ya know what I mean Kind of a waste of money and time. I used the Flowmaster 3" and no Cat and it sounds good and runs good. I put the exit out in front of the Right Rear Tire and slightly turned it down to echo off the ground. :] Sweet.
Good Luck,
Lynn

Save up your money and get the PPH headers, you will not notice much of a gain with just a cat back anyway. Headers, high-flow cat, muffler will make you happy.

Besides those pre-cats is what kills your performance, I have a 01 too, and it made a huge difference with the new headers.
