Subject: Bad fuel injectors???

Message:
I have heard some talk about the 5.2L oozing up injectors. My 5.2 has about 125k on it and I have owned it for about 2 years 18k. Throughout this whole time I have noticed a slight power loss. I gained some of this back when I took off the cat. But it still had more balls 2 years ago. When I listen to it idle on the passenger bank there is this terrible grinding. Its not the alternator cause thats new. Mechanic is clueless. My pickup backfires a fair amount. I was wondering is it a bad injector. If so how hard is it to replace injectors yourself. It doesnt look too hard they sit right there. I still cant tell for sure but I think the sound comes from around the fuel rail or the valve cover on the passenger side. I sure as hell hope that a valve isnt going bad. I hope its justa bunk injector. Plz help me out, I dont want my dak to strand me on a road trip again. :-(

Take a vacuum reading at idle (note down the actual vacuum and if it sways or jumps), and do a compression check. That's the easiest way to see how "strong" an engine still is.

As far as your injectors go they are very easy to change. You didn't post a year for your Dak but if it's anything like mine ('91) you remove one screw from the top of the injector which is actually your 12v supply. It kinda looks like a ball, but it's a plug. Once the bolt(torx) is removed pull the plug off. Inside You'll find the injector. Some times You can pull it out simply using Your index and thumb, other times they're stuck in there pretty good. If this is the case carefully use needle nose plyers. Regarding Your backfiring problem it might just be a dirty ignition system (i.e. dist. cap&rotor, corrosion),and watch for a faulty pick-up coil (those can throw you for a loop).yours trully, Personnal experience. Good luck. Peace.
