Subject: Looking for a 5.2 L short block IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a vortech kit for my 1992 5.2L dakota and I'm really anxious to put the blower on the truck, but due to the milage I am waiting until I can either find a used short or long block with not more than 50 or 60k miles on it or I can find a company that sells assembled short blocks. Can anyone please help me out. I am having some difficulty finding the 318. I do not want to upgrade to a 360 for two main reasons. I am only interested in 318's. If anyone has any info. they can email me at (justins96ss@yahoo.com) Thanks to all that read this post.

Message: Hi, There are two main reasons I don't want to go with a 360. One the 360 has more of a tendancy of blowing head gaskets than the 318. I'm not real sure why because the bolt pattern in the heads is obviousy the same. The only thing I can think of is maybe the fact that the bore is not quite as big there is more area of metal putting more even pressure on the head gaskets. I have a buddy with 92' dakota with a 360 in it with a paxton on it. He has had a real problem with the head gaskets. Essentially it was the end of the motor. The oil pick up screen was clogged with particles of head gasket which inturn ruined the oil pressure and so on. He never used to have a problem with the 318 and he currently has the 318 in the truck now. Finally, the second reason is that the 318 short block comes internally balanced from the factory and the 360 does not. This is not that big of a deal because once you rebuild the motor you can have the 360 balaced and blueprinted. I'm going to have the original motor rebuilt once I make the engine swap. I just want to cut down on the down time of the vehicle. Also I'll have a fully rebuilt engine ready to drop in the truck when the new engine goes south in the future. I'll let you know how the truck does after I put the blower on. I'll probably also throw in a better blower grind cam while I'm at it.
Take care,Justin
