Has anyone who has the new 70mm throttle body noticed a major decrease in mpg? Doesn't seem that it would change all that much but i was just wondering.

I've noticed a major drop in mpg. I've also noticed a major increase in wear on the rear tires, a major increase in smoke coming from my rear fenderwells, and a major worn out spot in the firewall. I think it's from where the gas pedal keeps getting shoved through it. Other than that, I've noticed that my face keeps cramping up from the grin that I have all the time now.

These are all very odd symptoms and I am going to the dealer to get the looked at.

Yeah but did you notice the big drop in mpg because you always have your foot to the floor? What about when you are driving normal? Or should I say...maybe 5mph over the speed limit with accelerations like the rest of traffic.

I'm still trying to research that part. So far, I've only driven a little bit on the highway. I usually drive 25-40 miles a day (most of that on the highway) to & from work. I put the TB on last Thurs nite, and then did lots of street driving over the weekend. I'll have a more accurate picture on the next tank of gas. But, so far, it's really hard not to sprint down every entrance ramp and hammer it from every traffic light. Heh. Then there's the guys at Pep Boys... "Come on man, show us that burn out one more time." "Okay, okay.... but only one more time."

I did notice that the throttle return spring is slightly lighter than stock, so the pedal is a bit "lighter" and it does actually travel quicker. I'm still working on finesse. A week's more seat time, and we'll know for sure.

If you put it on, and do NOT modify your driving style, you should see a mpg increase. The engine is able to breathe easier (on paper).

I'm sure it is hard to not haul ass. I'm very much a novice evrything on my Dak. I wasn't sure whether or not the throttle body is directly related to fuel injection or not. My mpg already isn't that great. I'd hate to foul it up by putting on a purely go fast mod.

The Throttlebody is very much related to fuel injection. It is one half of the basic fuel injection equipment. It takes in the air and sends it through the intake manifold. On a Multi-port Injected engine (MPI- all Magnum engines are MPI), the fuel injectors (the other half of the basic system) are right at the end of the intake manifold runners, mixing fuel with the air at the last minute. The computer is monitoring the amount of air through various sensors and then telling the injectors how much fuel to mix with that air. So, if you put on a larger Throttlebody, allowing more air in, the computer will compensate by mixing more fuel in with that air. The 70 mm throttlebody that everyone speaks of is much larger than the 65mm stock (or 68mm as in the 2001-2002 models) and it will allow more air in. It is not necessarily letting more air in all the time, if you are not always stomping on the pedal all the time. So it is possible to bolt one of these on and NOT see a drop in gas mileage. But, when you dont' mind losing a gallon or, two, the power is always there to step on. It's all in your driving style.

Complicated, but I hope this helps.

That was actually a really good explaination.
Thanks for the info. Now if G-Forced would just hurry up and come out with their 4" cold air intake for the 4.7L i'd be set.

I bought the Volant intake tube. www.volantperformance.com
They have a 3 3/4" diameter tube cast in the same plastic as the K&N FIPK's and it's pretty simple to bolt on. I paid $215 at truckperformance.com

Thye drop-ship the tube straight from Volant, but it's worth the wait. Now my 4.7 sounds like an old 70's cop car when I stomp it.

Check 'em out. There's a pic of the final installation at Volant's website.

Yeah I looked at those too. But the G-force intake puts the filter outside the engine well. Plus the aluminum makes the engine bay look alot cleaner and less cluttered. If the g-forced doesn't come out soon i think i'm going to get the 9" pro-flow z-tube.

Volant needs to come out with one of those fancy air scoop attachments for their filter for the 4.7L. Then i think i'd be all over it. Especially if the price is $215. Though i think the price would be little mor with the fancy add ons

Looks like a viable option, but I'd look carefully at price versus gain. CNC bending that which can be welded will bump the cost waaay up. Sure welding will create some turbulence, but if we're only talking a difference in 1 or 2 hp, then cost may not justify it. Guess you'll have to wait & see the power figures.

Yeah i've thought about that. Guess i'll have to wait and see. i keep hoping that the price won't be that high but i have a feeling it will. Though the bends aren't that radical in the G-force intake.
