Subject: MAJOR PROBLEM with Perf Accessories Lift
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello to everyone!

I dont know if this is a warning to those who want one, or a question to those who have one.
In February I had a Performance Accessories 3 in Body Lift kit installed by 4 Wheel Parts on my 2001 Q/C (4.7L), and it has been nothing but problems since.

First off, after a couple months, blam, I started spewing antifreeze all over the parking lot. Turned out to be a shotty installation of the hose extender for the radiator. Got that fixed after a week. That was 4 wheel parts fault (though they fixed it free no questions asked).

Second, (and I guess final since this problem has been a concoction of few), I start to overheat again at odd times, night time, cool, on the freeway, of course in addition to usual times like idleing at a light in midday. I bleed the system a couple of times which helps, but only for a while, then it starts again. So I take it back it to the dealership. Of course, it doesn't do it for them. It keeps doing it, so I take it back to the dealership and tell em' to keep it for a few days and drive it. It finally over heats on them, so they replace the radiator which "has a hole melted in it", so they replace the radiator (warranty covered BTW). That fixes the problem for a week. It starts doing its thing again, so I take it back, and here is what they find...

Apparently, there is a blockage inside the casing on the bottom of the engine where the radiator fluid circulates, creating intermittent overheating and generally just hot running. The dealership says that it might be because of the body lift kit...

Now could that be? The problem is inside the engine nowhere near any part of the body that might have been raised around it and affected something. Since when does a body lift installation require taking apart any internal engine parts?

I just hope they aren't just saying that to try and screw me out of the warranty, even though they fixed the radiator at no charge which they determined was a direct cause of the installation.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hey GenIII

Beautiful Q/C you have there!

Yeah, I wish I could say that it was a mfg defect. ON the bright side, another guy in the area is having the same problem (just found out), and his engine came off the mfg. line within 2 weeks of mine, but he has a body lift too. SO dont know what that means.

I talked to the dealer again about voiding the warranty, and the service manager said that it would not on this repair (phew!!! $3500 repair bill there!), but the district manager might deem the warranty void from here on out IF they determine that the body lift was the problem. Then I have two options, take the lift off (which means the tires too :() or no longer have warranty.

Your dealer is full of crap! I have had my lift kit on since January and the hose splice came off too, but the place that installed the lift had the hose splice flanged and it has done great ever since. There is absolutley no way the lift is causing the overheating unless the hose is pinched or something. If the lift was put on properly then I would say there has to be some sort of defect.

OPINIONS ARE LIKE....WELL, YOU KNOW THE REST!!

hay Jim, so the dealer says that the body lift could of caused the the internal blockage "in" your engine. First why is it that lately when I hear or read something about someone taking their vehicle to the dealer, the dealer gives the most lamest reasons why our car or trucks are doing what they are doing. I guess they do not teach trouble shooting in wrench school any more. It's just plug in the code seeker and go by that. When I was working at a shop that did A LOT of body lifts, we did not experiance any problems with over heating. It does help if they check their own work when they are done. If I where you I would go to rep shop and ask their oppinion on the cooling system. I had the same exact problem with my jeep GC 5.2, after changing ever peice on the cooling system I finnally found out that the only thing I had done was the water pump, and that was my probelem. I know you have 4.7, but do not leave out the basics.

Jim, if that compliment was for me, thanks.
Have you tried another dealer? I don't see any way that the lift could cause the problem you are speaking of. Start threatening w/ letters to DC, the BBB and a lawsuit. Tell them you are gonna put a sign on your truck warning that their dealership sucks (I've actually seen that one work before). I bet they come around. Tell them you don't give a crap about the District manager, and that you're going over his head. He can't just arbitrarily void your warranty. There is a law against it. They would have to prove that the lift is causing the problem. I'll see if I can find the name of that law you can quote to them. Hang in there...you will prevail.

Dealer is full of sheet (once again). Some of them (personal experience) will do anything they can to make money, and that includes charging you for what is or should be obvious warranty repair work. Remember this little fact: dealerships make the majority (read 75-80%) of their money on used car sales and the SERVICE department. If they keep up the B.S. lines about the lift voiding the warranty, just tell them to have their attorney read US Title 15 Chapter 50 (M-M Act). It's so funny when you call their bluff...
