Message: Hey fellow Dak owners. just a couple quick questions for you knowlageable people. i have a '92 Dakota 4x2 V8 ext. cab with about 191,000 miles on the clock. my questions to you are.....every now and then when i fire my truck up, i get a blueish white smoke cloud out of my exhaust pipe. it only happens when the engine is hot already ie. already ran it that day, or it has been sitting in the hot sun for a good portion of the day. any info on this would be greatly appriciated.

Message: Your old engine has converted itself to a two
stroke, in hopes that a powerband is its anti
aging cure.
Actually, its just a little oil getting past your
worn piston rings. Usually occurs during cold
start up, but warm is not uncommon. If it
smokes constantly you have a really worn out
motor, dont count on it for too long. It may run
long but the environmental sniffer will
probably shut you down sooner.

Message: Yeah, sounds like rings to me as well. Might also be valve guides. Oil flows a lot easier through worn seals when it's warm, because it's not as thick.
Since the engine is running still, and it sounds like the only problem is the oil poofs, I'd run a compression check on it. If you get low readings, consider getting it rebuilt. Machine shop work, including new pistons, rings, valve guides, and all seals should run about $1500. If your readings are fine, just keep an eye on it, because at 191,000 miles your going to need a rebuild sooner instead of later.
Of course, if you do a rebuilt, it may be a good time to consider getting the heads ported and valves done, doing a new cam, new intake, better timing chain, higher-flow oil pump, .010 pistons... ect, ect.

Message: Just another note
I drove a Dodge van at work in 1976. It had the same milage. We drove it past 300,000 miles before I went to another company. If it is the valve guide seals they will smoke a little at start up hot or cold. If it has been sitting a while. Just start saving your pennies now. You might make it another couple of years.

Message: Typically if mine does that it's just because I need to get the oil changed. I change the oil and it doesn't smoke anymore.

Message: A puff of smoke when first starting or when shifting or coming off the throttle is valve guide seals are probably needing replaced. During high vacuum conditions such as above the increased intake vacuum will suck oil in around the valve stems.
If it smokes for a while after starting then quits, it will be rings. They seal better after heated and expanded.
If it smokes all the time... Rings and valve seals/guides.
Bummer about my 4.7L, the service manual states the guides are not serviceable or replaceable. If they get bad, you need to replace the heads... Weird.

Message: Dave Mitchell, They make valves with oversized valve stems for heads that have non-serviveable guides. I had to look up some of these a few days ago. I had never heard of this before myself. I had only heard of valves with oversized head diameters not stem diameter. I am guessing that you either hone or chamfer the guides and then install the larger valves.

Message: Thanks guys. One other quick question. Could I install ported/polished stage II R/T heads from Hughes Engines and solve the problem? I was thinking about getting those here within next few months along with their M1 intake and stage II TB. If i do that, are the exhaust ports on the heads the same as my original 318's? Would i be able to use JBA headers for the 318 still? Thanks Again Guys.

Message: Your money would be better spent on overhualing or rebuilding the engine. It does not make sense to put HP heads on a tired engine!
