 Subject: Oil Filter removal (Coke Bottle Method)

Could some explain the 2 liter coke bottle method for removing the oil filter from my 2001 5.9 with the skid plates?
Apparently my dealer doesn't know this method as they have to remove the skid plates and wash them when I bring my truck back 'cause of dripping oil. My free oil changes have run out, so I've got to do it myself now.
Was going to punch a hole in the filter after loosening it, but the 2 liter bottle method sounds much more elegant. This would help eliminate my learning curve.
