Message: Just did mine on friday. I didn't use a torque wrench, just tightened it using a 1/2 drive.
I used a new gasket - the original one came apart and stuck to both the neck and the seat faces. I was amazed as the truck only has 4K on it. Used a razor blade to scrape the neck and a dremel with a flex shaft to wire wheel the seat, hasn't leaked yet. Changed many a stat over the years and never had a problem. This was the toughest cause of all the stuff around the stat.
Possible fixes (in order) are:
Loosening, then tightening each nut first hand tight, then 1/4 turn each until tight.
Removing the rad hose and cleaning both surfaces.
Using a gasket sealer.

Message: when i changed it my gasket was shot to hell too. with only 1800 miles on it. anyways, i used a knife to lightly scrape the housing clean. then used a flathead screwdriver to scrap the seat. put a thin coat of rtv underneath the gasket but not on top. right now i have it torqued down to a little over 15 foot/pounds.
i just got back from a test drive and it works fine, however, if i run the AC then it begins to leak a little. so i torqued just a hair more. i dont need a stripped bolt on top of this.
hmmmm...
