Subject: Can someone explain exhaust??? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 rt and i want duel exhaust. I could not find a cat back kit like i could for my old car. I was wondering the disadvantages about a duel exhaust and the benefits. Can u get a true duel exhaust for these trucks or just from the muffler back?? My car has a cat back system with 2 mufflers. can this be done with these trucks? Will this affect alot? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I just got it and i want some more noise! Am i off or can u get a cat back duel system.

Message: you can do true duals if you want, but you can also due a cat back. Gibson's are the most widespread, but MBRP are the best.
premier-automotive.net is where you can get an MBRP from. They are a little more expensive then the Gibsons, and flows, but they are alot better.

Message: A lot of the R/T guys run a single 3" line with a single muffler. Depending on your year you may have pre cats, 2001 and up have 2 cats, 1 on each branch of the Y pipe and then an after cat on the main 2.5" line of the exhaust before the muffler. They are pretty big cats stock, but 3 is overkill. They had only 1 cat in 99-2000, and those all passed emissions just fine. I think they did it to make all the trucks Cali legal instead of making 2 different versions of the truck. Those 2 precats really soak up some power and are not really needed, unless you live in cali or some real smog strict state. There is a group buy for a 3" hi-flow catalytic converter going on. Its $80 for a 3" Magnaflow (Car-Sound) Cat and $73 for a 2 1/2" Cat, those are all shipped out the door prices. Email B1llyw@a0l.com, that's a 1 not an i. Its pretty easy to have a muffler shop install a 3" pipe off your y-pipe and then a 3" cat and then a 3" muffler etc. This really does flow some air and does not kill your torque curve like a true dual setup does. A true dual setup was originally designed for a race car that has some killer top end air flow and mainly concerned with HP, not TQ. This fab can probably be done for $300 or so depending on the type of muffler you want. You can also probably find a junk yard with a wrecked R/T and get a catless y-pipe, which is what I am trying to do for my 4.7L. Ok, hope that helped. Later

Message: I don't have a response to the above question, but have a question about exhaust. I have a 4.7 litre with a 5 speed. I want to put headers and true exhaust all the way out the back, i.e., header-exhaust pipe-cat-pipe-muffler-tail pipe, on each side. Any thoughts?

Message: I have heard this many times before, but i have a 2001 4.7 and i have no pre-cats and only one main cat. I have heard that all 2001's and up have 3 cats. I was going to remove my main cat or put on a high flow main if i had the precats. NO LUCK.
I have also been shopping for a cat-back exhaust for some time...I like the price of the gibsons, but I hate their sound. I like the sound of the magnaflows, but I hate their price. :) Untill I found this site... www.bigexhaust.com I found the magnaflow for 361.00 its like 400-440 everywhere else.

Message: just go out and buy whichever muffler you want and get a smaller noname shop to bend pipes for cash. Beleive it or not the best sounding muffler on a dakota is a flow-pro, they also happen to be cheaper. Why pay big cash when you can buy all the parts way cheaper(no name stamp) and pay cash for the labour.
That way you can have what ever you want.
Thats how we do it in Canada

Message: the 2002 4.7 has 2 cats right on the exhaust manifolds and 1 where the 2 pipes come together mine does anyway i gutted the 3rd cat put straight pipe in place of the muffler and it sounds tough not as loud as you think good rumble and really good when you get on it pretty quiet at highway speeds. as for the log manifolds there has been a lot of research done on this subject they could only find a 1 to 2 % flow differance, the concensus is that it isnt worth the money for headers and the stock mans will last forever trouble free there are thread posted on this site

Message: cool deal
now specifically you just cut open the cat and reached in with your hand and pulled the thingy in the middle out?
a freind of mine said he could knock the "monolithic ceramic core" out with a broom handle
and then gas it to shoot the core out thend if the muffler was off
i'd be doing this on a weekend where i have a cutting torch and a welder and decent set of tools
thanks for your help i just hate having my friends' trucks beat me.
