 Subject: 1999 DAKOTA HESITATION AT 100KM

I LOVE MY 1999 DAKOTA CLUBCAB 4X4, BUT I'AM EXPERIENCING A HESITATION IN OVERDRIVE AT A SPEED OF 60 MILES PER HOUR. THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FROM OVERDRIVE TO DRIVE CONSTANTY. WHEN I HIT THE PEDAL,THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY FOR APPRO. 10 MINS AND THEN RETURNS. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER FOUR TIMES IN THE LAST WEEK AND A HALF, ONE FUEL INJECTOR WAS REPLACED AND A MAJOR TUNE UP WAS COMPLETED. I SPENT TO DATE $600 OUT OF MY POCKET PLUS THE DEALER RECALL ON THE INJECTOR. COULD THE PROBLEM ORGINATE DUE TO INFREQUENT TRANSMISSION OIL AND FILTER MAINTENANCE AND OR O2 SENSOR, NEED HELP, NO END AT THE DEALER, PLEASE HELP!!!

I had the same damn problem with my 97. Heres what maybe wrong, and this may be something you want to do anyway because around 100k your going to need this stuff regardless.
First and foremost, replace the damn fuel filter, and run some STP complete fuel system cleaner through your car twice (once with every oil change).
Second, check the Cat Converter, there is a 90% chance at 100k miles that your converter is either clogged, or is becoming clogged. This can reduce throttle response and cause severe power loss in low-mid range. Getting a brand new Cat (high flow preferred) will definately make a huge difference in a truck that old.
Third, and finally.... Have the dealership check your timing chain. According to most dodge dealer mechanics, the timing chain on most dakotas has a big tendancy to become loose. This will cause strange shifting and poor throttle response and sluggy shifts.
Aside from the normal 3000 mile check-ups, look up in the service manuals what the dealership would replace/clean in a standard 100k mile checkup, and try to do some of those things yourself, the more you do, the more you save, believe me. Hope this helps ya!

Try a new TPS sensor. Shoudl be around $30 at the dealer parts counter.

I had the exact same problem with my 5.2 On close examination I noticed that it was always around 2000 rpm. I wound up reindexing my distributor. It runs like a new truck again. I drove it this way almost a year until I finally found the problem.

I had the same problem whith my 99 Dakota SLT. The dealer ran check after check and even changed the over-drive solinoid in the transmision. I took the truck to another dealer and asked if my assumption of the throttle positioning switch could be the cause and guess what, Dodge had put out a message after a year that some of them go bad but not enough for a recall. Dodge has made a completely differant switch(Differant part number) and my problem went away. Good luck with yours.

Over the last few weeks I have had trouble with my 99 Dodge Dakota (3.9L V6). First, when I am idling or slowing down to stop, my truck stalls.It also has a loss of power and misses very badly on a pull. The truck has been tuned up. I have replaced the fuel injector(#4), catalitic convertor, map sensor, and now dodge dealer is telling me I need a new crank sensor. Currently, the truck will not even turn over. I have to drift start it. Ever since the first time I drift started it, the air conditioning and the speedometer are not working. It acts like the clutch is not engaged when I turn key. Any advise?

hey brant. do you have anymore info on the fuel injector recall? i have a 97 and i had to take them off and clean them twice in the last month. it looks like rust is clogging them.

Caution to all Dodge Dakota V8 5.2L owners. I know several people including myself that have the same problem (while foot off gas and coasting, then you hit the gas the vehicle hesitates and then bucks to get going almost like it's not catching). Mine has been at the shop (Carter Dodge) in Connecticut for 6 days now and although they can reporduce the problem they have no idea how to fix it. It's like they either don't care or they can't. This is my last Dodge ever!

I have the same problem with my 2001 Dakota QC, 110K miles, 4.7 Auto Trans. At 2000 RPM on flat hwy the engine rises slightly to 2200 RPM for 2-3 seconds and comes back down about once or twice a minute then goes away for some time.
I have no slip in the lower gear range. Still good grab and kick when needed.
I think I'll try the $40 TPS as it sounds to be the least expensive alternative.
Can anyone tell me exactly where the TPS is located on the engine and if there's any tricks to removing/replacing it?
