Subject: should i convert to carb? IP: Logged
Message: i have a 94 dakota v8 5 sp., im getting fuel but no spark. im also pretty sure the battery is draining also. ive replaced coil, hall effect sensor. sometimes i get 12v to the coil, but the
other signal is not present. now im pretty sure nothing works.
im pretty good with fords but all these relays and crap im so flustered and the haynes manual
for the electrical pretty much sucks to me.
im pretty hard headed about taking my vehicles to a mechanic, but i dont think i can fix this truck.
so im thinking of converting it to a carb.
what should i do?

Message: well ok but i was thinking it would be cheaper to get a carb than buy 1,000$ worth of parts to get this thing running.

Message: I know a guy that converted his V8 Camaro from Fuel Injection to Carberator...
The engine seezed up the next week while taking the family on vacation to Mane.
(obviously he had jetted the carb too LEAN.)

Message: The SBEC controls some of the dash guages. Convert to carb. and they won't work.
You could always run aftermarket guages.

Message: Bruce P.,
Are you sure it was running lean , it sounds like an overly rich problem to me. If it was lean it would ping like hell and probably knock a few holes in the pistons but the motor would still turn over. If it's overly rich it will wash down the cylinder walls with fuel and contaminate the oil , also reducing the viscosity of the oil and damaging the rod and main bearings causing it to lock up. If it was running this rich though it would also belch black smoke all the time and run like guano. The other problem is that its a worn out POS Chevy.

Message: LEAN makes a very HOT burning mixture and can cause engine seazures.
RICH makes for a cooler-running engine. (and black smoke like you say) It is extreemly unkikely that running RICH would cause catastrophic engine damage.
If you have ever seen the plot of Horsepower-vs-AirFuel mixture, It is obvious that running on the RICH side is most desireable. Not only does the power fall off less quickly on the RICH side of stoichiometric, (the ideal 1:15) but there are cooling benifets from the excess fuel molecules being available to carry away the heat.

Message: Take your Dak to a Mopar dealer you can trust. Ask if you can get the computer checked with their hand-held scope. They may do the check for free or reasonable if you explain your problem. You didn't say what your miles total was. I had a '92 that the original computer acted up and was replaced a 160K miles. Check the battery posts and the battery for a bad cell.
