 Subject: U0024 error code

Message:
Was told code meant "can b bus circuit open". One dealer wants $140. to hook up a machine that will tell me what is wrong. Former dodge tech said it's a low speed sensor. Is he correct and is there a way to check this before replacement? It's a 2005 Dakota w/4.7 and 4wheel drive. The code doesn't show on an obd reader. Just have the word error where the odometer/trip meter should be. Mileage/ trip doesn't work on the dash but the overhead console trip does work.
