 Subject: 1999 converted 231 to 242 Transfer Case?

Several years ago our transfer case exploded while my wife was driving the Dakota. The shop that worked on the truck said that they could not get a 231 case at that time but had a heavier duty 242 case they could put in. I guess I did not understand that this would give me an AWD truck. We are moving to Wyoming and I surely want to have the Dakota after we move there but I am unsure if this is a safe option with the changes that were made. We have the 318 V8 and the extended cab. It has been a great truck. I would like to hear what others think about the switch. Thank you
