Subject: 5.9 Heads? IP: Logged
Message: Anyone know anything about 5.9 heads on a 5.2? I have a set of 96 5.9 magnum heads, and i have 91 5.2. If this is possible i would like to also throw on an M1 intake and a Throttle body. Any info appreciated.

Message: '91 V8 5.2 & 5.9 is a premagnum engine. Uses 5 bolt valve covers to start with... the magnum uses 10 bolt (8 and 9 on mine-- he he) valve covers.
They are pretty much NON- interchangeable parts wise.

Message: you may have A hard time getting them to bolt up. there is an artical in " hod rod " mag.( I think )I will have to go home and find it. tells the diffrence of the magnum and non-magnum engines, as far as swapping parts. If I cam find it I wil tell you the issue #

Message: You can use Magnum heads on a LA engine , you have to use AMC hyd lifters , roller rockers , 302 ford pushrods , Magnum intake and valve covers. It's a fairly common swap , you can also re-use you're stock intake if you plug and re-drill you're Magnum heads to the LA bolt pattern.

Message: I wouldn't say it's common, just possible. The added machine work makes it not really worth it. There are plenty of good magnum parts, as well as non-magnum parts. If you want to do a Magnum then do it, if you want to do a non-magnum then stick with that. It seems unnecessary to Frankinstien the two together.

Message: Its a bolt together deal if you buy a magnum intake , the only reason you would have to do any machine work is if you want to retain you're stock intake. One of my friends showed me how to put one together with off the shelf parts and it works great. He runs a 3800# '74 Cuda with a 360 , 4 speed and 3.91's and is turning 13.20's@104 with no traction on 275/60 BFG Drag Radials. His combo is a LA 360 with flat tops and a 284/.484 cam , stock Magnum heads with 1.92/1.62 valves , Crane AMC lifters , Comp Roller rockers , 302 ford pushrods , M1 single plane with a 750 holley and not much else , on a 360 the Magnums raise the comp by a point and flow better than the old style 360 heads.

Message: I think like CW said the oiling holes don't just line up perfect, it's not just a use the heads with the intake and it will bolt up kind of thing, as the magnum needs to oil through the pushrods, and the old style oiled through the shaft mounted rocker arms. Maybe it is easier to put Magnum heads on a non-magnum motor then it is to go the other way, but I remember when the magnum was new and Mopar Muscle bolted a set of Magnum heads on an older LA motor and it was quite a bit of work. At the time the 340 heads, or the MP X heads were surperior to the Magnum swirl heads anyway so they didn't see the point. Now the new MP Magnum R/T heads (not the stock R/T heads but the ones from MP) are probably the best LA heads ever so maybe it would be worth it.

Message: I said I would find the mag article talking about swapping parts between magnum end non-magnum engines.
Check out HOT ROD issue June of 99 has part 2 of inter-changability of mag and non-mag engines.

Message: well worth the work. all parts you need are in the mopar perfomance catalog.head work can be done cheep at hughesengines.com.they did mine and i have about $300.00 invested with the cost of the heads from a junk yard. i have stock valves stock springs and turn 7500rpms on the off road track.i will never go back to the old j heads that are hard to find and everybody thinks are gold.do it now before everybody finds out what they are missing out on!
