Subject: almost new Moog ball joint fails safety

2000 2wd, O'Reilly cheap ball joint
cracked shaft in May at parking lot speed.
That one was 1 yr. Old. O'Reilly swapped
with Moog part in middle May. Now garage
failed that one only (older and cheaper
ones OK) with 20 thousandths play .020
inch, .5mm. It has 5000 miles on it.
Something don't seem right to me. Called
O'Reilly they will cover it based on that
paperwork. But I do labor of course plus
new alignment would be needed. If I don't
agree with findings I can take it a fair
distance to highway patrol, and original
tech. Could lose his job depending on what
HWY patrol says. Doing some digging found
documents which state up to 97 2wd had
.020 factory tolerance, document from Moog
and also one from Missouri state. So what
about 2000s, they should be same tolerance
for 2wd as 97.

Well mostly resolved... Called Moog, they sent test
procedure and tolerance is actually .060 for 2000
2wd. Called HWP they met me at garage and it
tested .049 play... Which is more than they
indicated yesterday and more than a 6 month old
Moog ball joint should have, (around 5000 miles on
that part). So it passed but is something to
watch. The garage had .020 tolerance in their
computer.
