Any ideas why my 318 over-heats constantly? I've done the simple stuff already, replaced cap, flushed radiator, etc.

be careful, some reverse poppet T'stats require a 7lb.low pressure cap.... and new don't mean good. they do hang up sometimes. also check for exhust gas comming out of your radiator. that would be a bad bad thang.

It's possible that the thermostat is backwards, the mix is about 50/50, new HD fan clutch, timing is ok, haven't checked water pump, oil is 15W50 (hot rod mechanic told me anything bigger than a V6 needed it in Texas weather), it's not the temp guage. I smell antifreeze burning, and the hood is hot!

I pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the radiator, it's only 6 months old.

I also live in Texas, and I run 10W30 with no problems...I've got a 318 with Mopar PCM, a more aggresive cam, and various other mods... You might consider going ahead and replacing your T-stat, as it may be going bad or is installed upside down... getting a flowcooler water pump would also help...

Later!

You need to find the blockage. It could be in the heads, in the manifold, the block...... When it starts to overheat you need to take the temp og the various parts of the engine. Hit it with an infered temp sensor.

The radiator is only 6 months old. The motor only had about 60,000 miles on it when it was put in, now it has about 75000 on it, and the 6 month warranty just expired.

I loose a little water every now and then. It really only over-heats when I drive it like a hot rod.

Try it a while without the t-stat. Keep a check on the water level.
Try to find the leak if you can.

I just saw your message. I may be a year late but, I know the answer. It happened to me here in Las Vegas NV. Your radiator is too small. Dakota's have a plastice radiator in them. I had over heating problems until it blew apart on me. Now I have a steel double core radiator and those overheating problems are gone.

Good diagnosis Houghtaling. Yea no one told you? You must replace the radiator with a better one on every dodge if you want to use the engine feature.

You can cure a lot of overheating problems with a larger capacity radiator. That does not always mean you found the problem though. The good thing about overheating is that several components are used together to cool the engine. Even if you are not smart enough to diagonose a failure, you can always increase engine cooling in other ways.

Some aftermarket radiators have narrow channels for better cooling, but clog easier than others when an older engine is flushed. There also harder to rod.Drain your radiator and see if there is residual at the top and if the gen. flow is good.

I have 109,000+ miles on my 96. Used to be that I would sit at a light in 110F temp and have the truck heat up. One day on 95 north my radiator just blew apart. Litterally. I had it towed to a radiator shop here in Vegas. The old guy, who was old when I was young, still owns and runs the shop. He told me that the plastic radiator in the Dodges are just to small for the heat around here. He said that he could put in the same size radiator in for me if I wanted, but I would have the same problems. I agreed to a new metal one. The old guy says it is not any other problem, but that the radiator is designed for a 4 cylinder not anything bigger.

If anyone wants his address and Number, send me an email. 1houghtaling@earthlink.net

I changed the thermo. twice , changed the fan clucth, water pump, flushed. When I turn the heater on it does cool down. I checked the flow from the radiator and it flows nice and constant.Pressure is good. I've about had it and seriosly thinking of selling the piece of junk. 99'gmc sierra. sobody help me!
