Message: 99 dodge dakota 5.2 e-fan,180 degree stat,
All winter my coolant gauge has only went a needles width past the the second line, and my gas milage has gone to crap. I believed my stat was stuck open but when replacing it i discovered it was in fact closed. I swapped it out anyways an i have the same results. Now when the air temp reaches 50 degrees outside the truck will reach the middle hash i believe 210 deg np while at idle/traffic, but Once i start driving it will go all the way back to the previous mark i spoke about. I'm cool with some deviation in the temp between idle opposed to driving but this seems excessive. I hooked a obdII reader up and monitored the temps and i noticed my top hose getting hot around 165-172 ish but given this is reading off the cts i feel it maybe misleading if its bad. So i then used a infrared light temp and i got 170ish at the thermostat/upper hose but in the corner of the radiator where the inlet is i read 200-215!? Can coolant leak past the thermostat causing it to vary in temp? does my thermostat require that rubber seal around it or is it ok to to drop in like normal? Do you think its a bad sensor/temp gauge?
Thanks for the help

Dodge, thermostat. Get the right temp too, 195.
A 195 will help you warm up and get better mileage.

Message: Thanks for reply,
Yea im thinking about going back to my stock clutch fan and 195 stat to see how she does. Should my year dakota have a rubber seal around the thermostat or one that sits in the grove for the stat? I'm still thinking i have a leak past the stat.

Message: The 5.2 doesn't have the rubber seal. The thermostat just sits on the manifold and the gasket goes over it.
It won't "leak" enough to matter.
