 Subject: Purge control circuit open

my 2002 4.7 quad cab with 185,000 is throwing the code that the
purge control circuit is stuck open. Im am trying to figure out if
this would be a canister malfunction or the purge control solenoid.
Would this also create an irregular idle/surge when I start it up after
sitting for an long time. i.e first thing in the morning? This is also
when i have been getting then "clatter" of the lash adjusters that for
the most part go away after a bit.
Also, any recommendations to keeping my little baby running for
years to come is very much welcome! thanks
