Subject: Freeze plug installation? IP: Logged
Message: I tried searching under this subject and didn't find any helpful info. regarding the installation of Freeze plugs.
My 2000 Dakota, 4.7L, with 148,000 miles on it was leaking anti-freeze, due to the freeze plugs (they rusted from the inside out).
Well, after removing the transmission, etc., etc. (to get to the rear plugs), we drilled and pulled the old rusty plugs out, cleaned up the rims with emory tape, added a black adhesive/sealant around the rims, and did our best to evenly tap in new ones (the wider rim brass ones).
After pressure testing them (with soapy water), we weren't very successful.
Anybody have experience with putting in freeze plugs? Tricks, tips, tools, sealants, or suggestions?
Your time and help would be very much appreciated! Thank you!
