Subject: Bearings or What ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4.7L V8.
I have an intermittent problem with a clattering
noise from either the A/C compressor or idler
bearings. The noise sounds like ball bearings
rattling in a metal can. The clattering comes and
goes, not steady. And, turning on the A/C doesn't
change the noise. Of course when I bring it by my
mechanic it's quiet...no noise.
Any ideas?

Take the belt off and spin the idler, I'm betting
it'll feel very rough.

It's probably not the a/c. If the clutch bearing
was bad it would make noise when the a/c was off and
if the compressor bearing was bad it would make
noise when the a/c was on. I doubt both bearings
would have failed.

It finally made the noise when I stopped by my
mechanic. Very Strange....it definitly appears to
be coming from the compressor clutch. But it comes
and goes. When it was loudest, just touching the
compressor, we could feel the vibration...Unless
it's the idler. I think we're going to replace the
idler FIRST and see if that's causing it.
Thanks for the reply.

Also, my cruse control is not working. I'm going
to check that when we pull the idler. They think
it might be the switch????

The compressor will cycle on/off. You can watch
the plate on the front of it, when the compressor
is engaged the plate spins, then it's not engaged,
the plate doesn't move.

It could be a bad switch on the cruise but it's
easy enough to check once you pull the cover on
the steering wheel. All the switches are
multiplexed, only two wires send all the signals
to the PCM. The PCM runs the servo under the
hood. It could also be a bad stop light switch.

The dealer can test everything using their DRB.
Not sure how your mechanic is doing it.
