Subject: Engine Swap 3.9 to either 5.2 or 5.9 IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys so I've been browsing the forum alot and like many people I just hate the 3.9 v6, its underpowered. I drive a 1999 Dakota SLT Ext. Cab with the 3.9 v6. I'm just wondering what all is needed to actually swap from the 3.9 to either the 5.2 or the 5.9.
Also another issue I'd have with this is the tranny likes to slip out of overdrive after it heats up (ex. driving it for about 5-10 minute) also on start up it likes to be suborn and not shift into 3rd gear. Its an automatic also.

Message: Either engine will fit. Many of the parts are the
same too.
The 5.2 could work with your current transmission
- if you're easy on it. The 5.9 would kill it.
The 5.2 should have the 44RE and the 5.9 the 46RE.
You have a 42RE. The 5.9 is also a bit different
in that it is externally balanced. You need to
use the 5.9 flexplate.
Since your transmission sounds like it has some
issues, change both. You'll need to add the two
extra injector wires to the harness (or swap the
harness) and the PCM.
Good luck.
