I just looked at the intake of my throttle body and found that it is covered with a thin film of black grease. What's with that! I change the air filter every 6000 miles so where is it coming from? Can I use regular carburator cleaner to clean it, or will I screw something up?
Thanks
TonyC

I just take a air-compressor and blow the grease off of the TB. As a matter of fact I did that today.

I'm talking about the inside of the throttle body. Is that what you mean?

Yep, that's what I mean. About once a month I use the compressor to blow all of the grease, dirt, etc off of everything. I also did the filter.

Compressed air can drive debris into the aluminum. Doesn't sound like much, but if there's enough gritty material, it can scower? the smooth surfaces.

Best bet to remove the TB, take some Berimans B-12 carb cleaner, spray it on a clean shop towel/rag, and wipe away the caked on oil deposits. If it doesn't come off easily, you can spray the B-12 directly on the TB ** Make sure you DO NOT soak the bearings--- otherwise you will cause them to prematurely fail.** It's also a good idea to check the sensors, and clean accordingly (again, don't soak anything.. spray, wipe clean only).

It's likely coming through the PCV Valve (isn't that redundant?), since it ventilates the crankcase into the air tube. It's typical, at higher RPMs and loads, for a small amount of oil mist to come out. But if your getting a lot, you might want to check the valve. Should cost less than $10 to replace if it needs it.

Take it out and shake it, if you can hear the valve action, it's probally ok. If not, it's stuck and needs to be replaced.

rtdkota is right. what he posted is the correct way to clean a TB. You have to remove it. I just did mine a few weeks ago. And after cleaning it the throttle response is more crisp.

Hey Nitro Junkie, speaking of TBs.... Checkout an F&B 50mm TB... it'll outflow a ported stocker, runs $399 shipped... Factor in you can easily get $100.00 for your stocker on Ebay... That's $299.00 total cost to you.

If you were to ever start spraying Nitrous, the stocker will start having problems over time due to the way the spray affects the shaft (not a problem on our new 50s).

If we can get 10 people interested in a mixture of 50/52s... I'll knock off $20.00 off each order! Guess you can call this a group buy!

The best thing to do is, remove the throttle body from the engine remove all the sensors and clean everything be very careful of the idle control valve ( the one in the back )when cleaning it DO NOT twist the shaft. Also do not forget to clean inside the throttle body where the idle control valve sits, It can get really nasty. put everything back together, and run the engine. In three days you will notice an increase in horsepower and torque.
