Subject: Fuel pressure issue? IP: Logged
Message: It's been ages since I had issues with my Dodge, but one just hit and it is kicking my butt. I believe I have the solution, but want your opinions before I blow a chunk of change. Better to be safe than sorry, right?
Alright, it is a 1995 Dakota Club Cab SLT 4x4 with the 318 Magnum and 3.55 gears. It recently became hard to start and would occasionally stall. I remembered I had Bosch Platinums installed in 2003 and realized I never changed them. I bought factory plugs this time and changed them. Now it starts easily enough, but I have a new issue!
The starting my be easy, but after it runs for a bit, it turns itself off. Like turning the key off. When cold, it starts and runs well. When warm, it may run like a champ or it may not even fire when being cranked over. I have verified spark.
This morning, after it sat all night, I checked the fuel pressure on the rail. Dead on 39psi. Key on, engine off, 39psi. Running at idle, 39psi. Running revved up, 39psi. It stalled while at 39psi after running fifteen minutes. After engine shutdown, it drops to around 15psi. Did I mention I hate disconnecting the pressure gauge?
Now, I already tested my TPS (0.742v closed, 3.81v wide-open), replaced my IAC motor, and cleaned the throttle-body when doing so. I did not know how to check the MAP sensor, but being that it runs fine and then just dies, I doubt it is the suspect. If you can tell me how to check it, I will if I can.
Finally, I only run 87 non-ethanol gas in it. I have a 2013 F-150 with the EcoBoost I use for my towing (the Dakota cannot pull my antique tractors), so it is not worked super-hard. It may pull motorcycles or a boat occasionally, but nothing heavy like an AC D19. In fact, my fiance uses it to go to and from work.
So is 39psi too low? What is the pressure supposed to be on this truck? I have an uncle-in-law that works on Chevy, and he noted that while he wasn't sure about Dodge, Chevy is supposed to be around 60psi. If my Dodge is also, then my pump/regulator assembly is clogged or in need of replacing. Thanks for your support. I do believe I need a fuel-pump/regulator assembly, but have to be sure.

Message: By the way, you can find pictures of the plugs at the links below. Mind you, they were in there eleven years. The close-up is of plug #8. It somehow loosened itself, not a good situation. I took it out by hand.

For some reason, the start of my links is forbidden. I do not remember this issue years back.

Message: Alright, I cranked it, drove it off the trailer, pulled it into the driveway, put it into park and it died. After that, it would start and run for maybe a second, then die.
It has been several hours, so I tried again. It cranked, ran for a minute or two, then died. Then it would crank and run for about a second again. Now it won't fire at all. I have spark, so I am lost. I can hear the pump running as it is cranked. What on earth could this phantom be?

Message: Well, I finally caught my phantom. At least, partially. The truck idled in my driveway for almost an hour, then started stumbling, revved back up and got smooth, stumbled, and shut off.
I was on the phone for about fifteen minutes, but when I got off, I removed the air filter housing and connected my fuel pressure gauge. No gas spray during connection and 0psi after. I turned the key off, then on. Pump runs, 0psi. I run the pump five or six times, 0psi. No gas on the ground, so no visible leak. I try cranking, wondering if my gauge is bad. Truck cranks at 0psi, stumbles, and dies.
So, I have no fuel pressure. Is there a way to determine if the regulator is bad or if I do have a leak somewhere that I am missing? I know the regulator is part of my pump on this model, which sucks due to buying a $175 part instead of a $20 part, but I need to be sure of the issue before dropping cash on a solution. Is there an in-line fuel-filter on my truck that could be clogged? I thought the only filter was in the tank, but must be sure. I'd hate to blow cash on a pump to find some small filter near the injectors.
