Subject: 2001 Dodge Dakota 4.7l Engine Missing IP: Logged
Message: My 01 Dakota recently starting having issues
lately with the engine missing. On start up the
engine runs smooth. After it has been running for
about 30 minutes, it developes a bad miss in the
engine and if you get on it hard, black smoke
rolls out of the tailpipe. I had the codes read
and there are several that came up, P0171, P0300,
P0303, and P0305. I replaced the coils on
cylinder 3 and 5 and it really did not help. Also
I do not know if it is connected or not, this past
winter when the tempature got below 20 degrees, I
was having a hard time keeping it running first
thing in the morning. I would start right up and
then immediately would start running real rough
until the temp would reach about 150 degrees then
it would run smooth. Any help would be
appreciated.

Message: One possibility is that the oxygen sensor could be reading lean, causing the computer to richen the mixture to where it is causing cylinders 3 and 5 to misfire.
Another more likely possibility is that the injectors on cylinders 3 and 5 are bad and not delivering enough fuel causing cylinders 3 and 5 to misfire. The oxygen sensor would report the lean condition causing the computer to richen the mixture and report the P0171 code and also cause the black smoke out the exhaust because the other cylinders are now too rich.
