Subject: Battery/ignition problems? IP: Logged
Message: Hello - newbie here. I have a 2000 Dakota Club Cab Sport Plus with 4.7 V-8 Magnum. This is not my everyday car, I usually only drive it in the summer. It kept on dying on me last summer, so I got a new battery and my mechanic gave it the once-over and said everything looked good. I didn't use it all winter, so of course I needed to charge it up (have an industrial electric charger)for a day before starting. Started right up, was using it every day for about 2 weeks - fine, no problem. Then didn't use if for a few days, did not start, the dash lights came on, but did not turn over, stuck it on charger again, was fine. However, just 12 hours later in the a.m. it did not start up - click click click but no juice.
So why is it not holding a charge? What else could it be? What do I need to have checked? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Message: Likely your battery is junk.
Lead acid batteries don't like to be discharged. It
may never have full capacity again.
Get the battery tested. If it passes, check the
alternator.

Message: Do as suggested. Have the battery load tested, if it fails buy a
new one. While your at it, since it's parked for long periods buy
yourself a battery tender. It will charge with a trickle charge
when the battery needs it when you're not using it. Those
quick chargers just cook all the electrolyte out of the battery
and ruin it.

Message: Thank you both aandpdan and daddio - I wondered if I was "frying" the battery by charging it so much.
Last summer before I got the new battery, I thought maybe it was an alternator problem. (But then it started up just dandy with the new battery).
I have never heard of the trickle charger - will investigate. Oooooooo a new toy! lol!
Thanks again!

Message: I should also ask - any recommendations on a good battery should it need replaced - like a super durable one?
Thanks!

Message: No battery will last if it sits unused all winter. Like daddio says, put it on a battery tender, not a charger. The tender will maintain it and not overcharge it.
Walmart is fine.
