JP,

Every engine prefers a different amount of oil pressure. Too high and too low are both bad. Most engines like something in the neighborhood of 10 PSI per 1000 RPM but that is not always the case.

A heavier weight oil gives you more pressure at the cost of lower flow volume. Plus, a heavier weight oil may increase wear on cold starts, and we are approaching Winter. Either of these can damage your engine.

I recommend that you use an oil in the recommended weight range per your Owners Manual and see what the oil pressure reading is then.

I'm using 10W40 Valvevaline oil and my pressure is running in the high normal range. Also if you got a oil linking out of the rings then I would recomend useing a higher weight.

My father in law gave his 96 Dakota sport with the magnum V8 to my son. He had a problem at some point with the oil idiot light coming on. He started to use Synthetic Oil and never had another problem. Recently, A friend changed the oil, and used regular oil. After a hundred miles or so, the light is back on. I drained the oil and replaced it with 10w 40 Castro Syntec, replaced the filter, and still have idiot light on. The truck only has 52K miles on it, and was driven by my father in-law for at least 40K, so it hasn't been abused. Sounds like the oil pump pick up screen/ filter might be the culprit. Any one have similar problem, or other suggestions?

Slightly off topic here but is it normal for Dakota oil pressure to fluctuate from the low normal (i guess) line at low RPM's to high normal (again I guess) line at higher RPM's? I have a 2001 Quad Cab with the 4.7 V8 with 42K miles and I don't remember the oil pressure flucuating this much when it was new. Is this something to be concerned with?

Rick, the cam bearings are replaced on the 5.2 just the same as all previous versions of the LA 318. The dealer just didn't want the hassle of pulling the engine to do it.

I have an oil pressure problem that has probably been answered previously but here goes again. Recently my truck when idling would only come up to about the first line on the oil pressure gauge. When driving it only comes up a bit past the middle line when hot. It used to be alot higher at idle and higher rpm. Just wondering if this sounds like the sludge deal or a sensor or what. Thanks guys.

I just experienced the same thing on my 95 Dakota 4x4 with 5.2 V8. I called a Mopar expert garage. They said clogged screen. I did a motor flush tonight. I drained it. I'm going to put a gallon of kerosene in tomorrow, through the dip-stick tube. I'll leave it in a day, not crank it, then drain. Refill with clean oil and new filter, then see if it worked. The mechanic said he'd fixed 2 this year this way. If this doesn't work, I've read the Haynes manual. It does seem like an incredible amount of work just to drop the pan and change the pick-up tube. I am very interested in any short cuts. The truck has over 216,000 miles!! but I bought it used. The previous owner was the original owner and says he NEVER had any engine work done on it!

We had a customer come in today with a 1999 RAM 1500. Has about 75000 miles on it. He said while driving down the road, the "Check Gauges" lamp came on and he noticed the oil pressure gauge had dropped to near the bottom. After inspecting his vehicle, we found enough cake for a party of 50. The oil on the dipstick was BLACK and thick, and smelled a little like fuel and a lot like burnt motor oil. Underneath the oil fill cap was Valvoline pudding. When we pulled the oil drain plug, we found enough chocolate syrup to go on all of that cake. When I asked him about his maintenance habits, he was highly offended at first. Then he reluctantly admitted that his habits were 5-6000 mile intervals and sometimes as long as 8000 miles. The current sticker showed he was 4000 miles past due.
Poor little 5.2.......

1998 5.2L V8 and oil pressure gauge

Experiencing similar problems to most above.

Oil pressure gauge drops to 0 at idle, usually after highway speed driving.

Dealer "fixed" the problem 2 years ago, oil pump, screen replacement. Following a six hour trip on the interstate, at the stop light on the exit ramp, the gauge dropped to 0 again. Touch the gas, raise the RPMs, and the gauge reads normal...

Bottom line is this is a design deficiency. American V8s are supposed to last forever. Not the 5.2. Dodge should be footing the bill. 100k is not the mileage that V8s should be having problems at. Will be my last. Too bad you can't get that good looking Ram look with someone else's motor! Never had trouble with my Z71, so I reckon I'm going back.

LOL well then I would say you haven't taken care of your truck bud.. Somebody didn't take care of the truck I have and it has 170k on it. My 1976 is the third 318 that I have over 300k on it.. You won't find many 350's to do that..

318 oil Pressure?
IP: Logged

I had a 92 RamCharger w/ a 318 and 150,000 hard driven miles...in the desert. ran solid till the day i sold it. So when the oppurtunity to buy my 99 dakota with the 318 arose i jumped all over it. WHAT A MISTAKE the 318 in 99 must have a design flaw. i lost oil pressure and was towed about 100 mi back home. i bipassed the sending unit with a manual gauge, sure enough it held 40....for about 10 minutes. I flushed the moter repeatively to remove any "sludge" all attempts failed. I ve never seen an oil pump go at 60,000. I agree that dodge should have had a recall after viewing hundreds of the same cases online. I will never buy dodge again. My 4.0v6 Ford Ranger ran strong for 100,000 and could probly smoke the dakota gutless 318

I agree.

It is very frustrating. The truck looks great, but the motor has serious anchor potential. Screen, intake, whatever; something's very wrong. Surprised, but relieved to hear that others have experienced the same. Dodge needs to take ownership of the problem, instead of passing the cost of their defect on to the working man...lesson well learned.

I am a firm believer in buying American, and the Ram looks great, but won't buy another...hope you're listening Dodge...or Daimler/Chrysler, or whoever you are.

My 1997 dakota with the 5.2 318 that has about 37K miles. Is doing the same thing. When I first start it cold the oil pressure goes to the middle of the gauge. Then after it is warmed up it stays just a hair above if not right on the first line of the gauge at idle. When I drive it and it is pulling semi high rpm. The gauge will go to the middle if not a hair past the middle. Does this mean I need to replace my screen or pickup tube in the oil pan? Or is everything ok.
