hey jim,
just thought I'd let you know what was going on. the dealer made an appointment at the Chrysler dealer, but they 've had it for a few days and they are "backed up" due to the big snowstorm. I read that the problem could be loose camshaft bearings or internal leaking of oil. If it's the latter it says to replace the head or the block!!

hey rick,
That is great it is going in to the dealer, hopefully something will get resolved. I finally have enough money for my replacement long block and hope to have my truck fixed in a few weeks. The main thing for you is that your problems should be covered under used vehicle warranty. Best of luck as the Dakota/Ram series of trucks are great trucks

Well let me tell you this is one for the record books, I have oil pressure weather the engine is hot or cold until over 3500 rpm when the gauge drops to zero. Have changed oil pump and screen with know luck, replaced all main and rod bearings then plastigauged them to make sure the crank was good, replace the oil pump drive shaft at a cost of 55.00 have a little over 1,000.00 into thr head ache. Love my 1992 Dakota with 5.2 mag 4 x 4 but still have the same problem. Next step is to change the cam bearings, hopefully that will fix it if not hi ho it's of to the junk yard it goes because I have with the exception of replacing the cam bearings, replaced the entire oiling system except for the block it's self and I will not put someone elses head ache in my truck. PS the pump drive saft was broken, but still did not correct the problem. If I forgot anything please let me know.

My '94 5.2 was dropping to 0 at idle after engine warmed up and I was noticing low oil pressure at highway speeds also. I had a web post brought to my attention that talked about oil filters and the fact that the Fram's are pieces of @#$t. I swapped the filter I used from Fram to K&N and noticed an immediate difference, but I also went to 20W50 Texaco oil so am not sure if fix was all filter. I will say this though, my oil pressure is higher than it was stock so I am thinking the heavier oil is causing that and the filter fixed other problem. This web post on filter said MOPAR filter are rebadged Frams so still piece of @#$t. Good luck!! By the way, don't shoot the messenger, I was a Fram fanatic from way back, but this web post author disassembled the filters and did a lot of research so I tend to believe him.

after a long ordeal with the dealer(not a Dodge dealer) it turned out my 99 5.2Dakota had "shattered cam bearings". The dealer bought the truck back from me to avoid them having to replace the engine. Supposedly the cam bearings are pressed into the block and you can't just replace them. You have to replace the "lower block". Hopefully your story ends better. I did go out and buy another Dakota though. An 02 4.7 sport, only problem so far is squeek from brakes.

Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 1996 5.9
My problem and how I corrected it.
Reads normal at start-up when engine hits 200 degrees. Very erratic - no real pattern - somthing at idle. Oil light NOT on while running. Bad sending unit - upon disassembling of broken part - found wear on rheostat type coil.
Theory: Motor gets warm, unit gets warm - unit acts up.

Someone told me that if i drained the oil down about 2 liter and put deisl fuel into the motor ran it under 3000 rpm for about 20 min this would help clean the slug out of the motor, pan ,screen etc..
Has anyone else heard of doing thins and will it work ????/

In the US we use quarts not liters. Although 2 liters is roughly equal to 2 quarts.

I changed the oil Saturday in my truck. I was using 15w-40 pennzoil which showed quite more pressure when at operating temperature and at highway speed and at idle. Does less oil pressure mean less protecton on bearings and other critical parts or not? Forgive me if this is a dumb question but I have to know. I had some extra castrol 10w-30 around so I decided to use it. Should I see a difference [lower oil pressure] switching from 15w-40 to 10w-30?
