Subject: Oil pressure gauge down IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys! I have a 2001 dodge Dakota 4.7 auto 4x4 reg cab and
a couple days ago when I started my truck after work and after
8 hours sitting in the cold (13 degrees)the "check gauges" light
came on and I noticed that the oil gauge was completely down
and after a few seconds the gauge started to move up and the
check gauges light turned off. The oil is at a normal level.
What could be causing the oil pressure gauge to stay down for
5 seconds? After the needle is moving up slowly it doesn't go
up at normal position but stays a little bit low from the normal
position. Is there a pressure oil switch going bad? Or is there a
sending unit going bad too? I would really appreciate if
someone knows or has an idea of what is causing the needle
to stay down. Thanks!!

Message: If it's never done it before. You could be using the wrong
viscosity oil. 13 degrees is awful cold. At least to me. It was 78
here yesterday.

Message: No, this is the first time it does that. My truck it has 178000
miles and unfortunately is burning some oil so instead of 5w-
30 I'm using 10w-30, now I had used that viscosity and it never
showed this issue before. The next oil change will be due soon
I will replace it with the 5w-30. There are no codes also, I
believe that it may be an electrical issue and not a oil pump
issue.
Thanks daddio.

Message: When in doubt, put a mechanical pressure gage on it. Im not sure if 10W is good for that low a temperature though.

Message: try using atf instead. it works better than engine oil or gear oil at subzero temperatures

Message: Hi guys! I found out what was causing the oil pressure gauge
to go down. The oil pressure sending unit was going bad, so I
replaced it with a new one and that fixed the issue, then the
oil pressure gauge came back up to a normal position. Thank
you all for your comments, sites like this one helps a lot to
Dakotas owners (do it yourself) like me. Thanks again and
Happy New Year!

Message: Hi there! Thanks for the insight! I recently bought an '01 Dakota with 125,000 miles on it. The other day I noticed when I would start it the oil press. gage would take a little bit to come up. It was cold here too(wind chills around -15). Last night it did it while driving down the Interstate so I got off at next exit and pulled into Wal-Mart. Tried to check oil and with the cold and wind it seemed low so I added a quart. Didn't really give it time to drain back in I guess so this morning checked it and it is still at the bottom and oil checks overfill. Owners manual says that too low or too high can cause "aereation?" Gonna have my mechanic look at it as soon as I can hopefully it will be ok.

Message: When my gauge is down, I just have the old lady play with it for a bit, or my sister if the old lady isn't around. That gets it right back up there.
