Subject: torque converter install, thump

I installed torque converter due to p0740 code after
replacing the solenoid to no avail.

I installed the TC on trans then installed trans to
motor. Filled with 1 quart atf 4 always. Then
installed the bolt from flexplate to the TC.

After installation I hear a continuous thump at
startup switch gears and thump remains.

I removed the cover plate to observe the flexplate
and notice it wobbles a bit and seems to go with the
thump. I can feel the thump all the way back on the
transfer case.

I removed the flexplate bolts and started the engine
, no noise. There is a space of about 1/16 to 1/8 of
and inch in between the flexplate and the TC.

I was thinking that if I install washers in between
the flexplate and the tc that this will rid me of
the noise.

I'm fairly confident that I seated the tc properly
as it drives with no issue.

My question is should I install these washers?
Its not going to be easy to do.

After installing the tc I feel some play, like up
and down like if on rubber, not a lot but some.

I have a 45rfe in my garage with a spare tc that I
practice on before my install and fell the same play
and assume this is normal. My point is its not solid
.

If I did remove a verify the tc to be seated more
than I would have more of a gap and the bolt would
just pull it out anyway.

Any help is appreciated

update

after carefully going over the install, I found the fuel line
bracket on drivers side on the bell housing was in between the
bell housing and the block. 1/16" was enough to throw it off.

No damage done. new torque converter cleared the p0740
code and increased my gas mileage.

next step is to find a 4.7 and rebuild it. my engine is blowing
blue smoke a little, and my lifters are tapping. 250k and still
has power.
