Message: I have also tried having it plugged up to get the codes off of it but everybody i have had plug up to it there readers wont read it so i havnt been able to even get a starting point any ideas on either ?

Message: you need to wait for the check engine light to come on b4 you can get a code out. mine keeps coming back cam crank sensor. this is a false reading!! bought a new sensor($600)no help,installed my new sensor in another dakota and it ran fine 4 a week so sensor was not bad

Message: You can read a code if there is one stored without the CEL being on. I think it takes the PCM seeing the same code 3 times within a certain timeframe to trip the CEL. So if it's only tripped the code once or twice the light won't be on but the code will be there. I've done it before myself. If you've tried several different code readers and cannot get a code, try the key trick. Turn the key on/off/on/off/on and the codes will display on the odometer depending on the year of your truck.
