okay, Just bought a 94 dakota for $850 from the
original owner. I got the window sticker and all.
Truck seems really solid and motor runs
surprisingly well (v8) and trans shifts perfectly.
But I noticed a small leak from the bellhousing.
its not really bad (i don't think) about the size
around of a golf ball after sitting for two days.
But i'd like to get this taken care of. Truck has
215k and is not 4wd. I've got a manual and I've
done a few clutches myself but never a rear main
seal. Just wondering if there are any tips that
anyone might have for me. Thanks!! and also any
other typical problems i should look for (besides
gas gauge not working) thanks in advance!!
Kory

I'm assuming you took care of this yourself, but for the benefit of others--

We had the same exact thing happen to our '94 Dakota. I was driving it to school one day when the transmission completely slipped as I was driving up the ramp in the parking garage. I discovered that about half the fluid had leaked out, fortunately I was able to get to a store and put some more in before I went home.

A few months later around New Years (sometimes we take awhile to get to things out here) we put it up on ramps in the back. Spent about a week trying to fix it (changed fluid/filter/gasket, naturally, and added the Lucas Trans Fix stuff). But after determining it was the rear main seal, had to give up as it entailed having to take the whole darn transmission out to fix it.

Only saving grace was that it only really started leaking after driving for about 20 minutes and the fluid was thin enough to start spraying everywhere. This state persisted until about a year ago when we had the seal replaced for around $1000 dollars. According to the mechanic, there was a fistful of metal in the pan, but it actually ran okay for another 9 months.

The damage, however, seems to have been done. Now we must shift the truck manually to change gears. (Any idea why this works while the automatic shift does not?) Moral of the story, get that damn seal fixed or you will greatly accelerate the destruction of your transmission.
