Subject: NV3500 correct Oil question? IP: Logged
Message: I have reviewed several bits of this forum and realize that there is a plethora of supporters of the AMS-Oil philosphy. Don't wanna start that debate.
I have the "Chrysler" number for the oil for my 4x4 transmission, however the parts guy as much as he tried, 'Guessed'... His suggestion was to put in Valvoline Synthetic 75W-140. The only cross reference we could find was to use GLS?
As I read through the many posts about oil choices it shows that this tranny may actually need only 5-W30?
Usage, maybe 1 or 3 times a month. Most of the time I use my motorcycle. I don't tow with it, even though it's the 4.7 L V8 with tow package and manual 4x4 setup.
Since This Sunday is my day to crack the tranny and transfer case, replace seals, clutch, pressure plate... etc. If anybody feels like providing some insite before I pour in this Valvoline I would be eternially greatful. So greatful I joined the forum just to ask for help.
Sincerely Scott at SBStemen (dot) Com

Message: Penzoil or Royal Purple Syncromesh oil will work in addition to the Mopar choice. The 75w-140 weight is wrong - that would be OK for the axle but not the tranny. You want 5w-30 oil that has additives for soft metals. Motor oil won't cut it. It needs to be oil specific to this tranny.
