I'm looking to replace the engine in my 2000 4x4 regular cab Dakota. It has a 5.9 360 engine. I was wondering what engine will be a direct fit other than a Dakota. Will a Durango or Ram truck engine fit without having to change ecu and harness? I'm looking to do an easy swap without having to do to many mods to make another engine work. Someone local told me I have to count the teeth on a shaft to see what engine I have.I didn't really understand what he was trying to explain. Can I tell from the vin which engine will work?

Any 5.9 from '99 to '03 ought to work. You use the
same pcm and harness that's in the truck you have
now. Your "local" is confusing the 5.9 with the
4.7. Pay no attention to him.

Thanks. It will be alot easier to find a good uesd Ram 5.9 than having to get one from a Dakota.

Will a 2000 (dakota) 5.9 engine / trans fit in a 2001 dakota that was originally equipped with a 4.7 litre? Will the engine harness and wiring need to swapped to make the conversion work or will the 4.7 harness work?
My son "DODGED" a deer and rolled a nice 2000 dakota quad-cab. I found a good deal on a 2001 quad cab minus the motor and trans.
They are both 4 wheel drive.

First any 93-01 360 block will be the same. The
RAM engine is just fine its the oil pan that you
will need to swap. Any emissions and electrical
will need to be reused in your truck.
Late 70's, no thats an LA block and not
interchangeable with the 93 and up Magnum block.
No a 5.9 is not going into a truck that has a 4.7
period. Bell housing is not the same don't
bother.

100 5.2 318 auto 2wd would it swap out with the 3.9 and if so

The V6 to V8 swap will require adding two wires into your existing harness to connect the two new injectors. The Green/Orange is common to all injectors so splice into that for the common. I found another harness from a V8 but after laying it out next to mine I found there were many different connectors and it would be easier to just add the extra injectors into the PCM connector. You will definitely need the PCM from the same year V8 and B&G Chrysler can help with that part if it needs programming and such. Same as above 93-01 360 blocks will be the same and share the same manifolds as a 318 which may be a better match for that V6 transmission. 318's were quite common in V8 4X4's and have plenty of power. Also get the throttle cable from a V8 and make sure you have a oil pan from a Dakota V8 so it will clear the cross member. Expect to make a heater hose longer and get the fan shroud from a V8 as well. The accessories are the same and will swap over and keep all emission related gear in your truck. 1994 magnum 318 but wont run off the computer , was
wondering if i can switch this engine to carb or if
not will an older style la 318 still bolt to my 2wd
5spd trans?
